I think it can mean (and please note I said 'can ' :)!) that you assimilate more quickly if you socialise with Australians.

And before you ask why I still read and occasionally post on a Brit site...I guess it's curiosity, a desire to help, and fascination. Oh and I still get the odd pm via PiA so I come on to check for those.
It is good to be honest. People like myself come on PIA to get the facts, not just a pretty picture, we want to be as prepared as possible when we get to Adelaide.
Unfortunately some people look at Oz and think of a dream life in the sun with a big house. Many people have said to me about having more money and bigger house and i have had to correct them.
Personally i wouldn't be making the move if i didn't have a job offer (which i have obviously accepted), it would be to much of a gamble. It just so happens the job i am going to will pay slightly more although i will be without tax credits and childcare benefit due to the visa i will be on so infact i will be worse of until i get PR.
I am following a dream i have got and wanting to provide my daughter with every opportunity i can, if it turns out it doesn't work (positive it will), i only have to jump on a plane home (i will however give it a good year or 2).
I wish you all the best Jomasey with your business and hope in time things will improve for you.
So glad we just had our two cars converted to LPG , yes it cost to get it done but at only 60cents a litre happy days all round. cheers Graham
Wow thats good just wondering how much does it cost to convert a car and can they do that to people carriers.
"I have ended up starting my own business - only because I have no other options! It is very stressful".
I would look at this as a step in the right direction and sometimng you should be proud of, lots of people would put running there own business at the top of there "ozzie dream" . I think that in some cases the people who are most dissapointed with Adelaide are the people who have not done there research properly. Adelaide is not paved with gold but bloody ell i would want my kids to grow up here ahead of the uk any day 100%.
And for the people comming with little money we have made friends with a family who came with very little...... and you know what they have grabbed Australia by the balls and are putting alot of us to shame they have set up a home, got to work, been thrifty with there funds and in ther mean time had some very serious family issues to deal with but they love it .........and if they get to read this (which they might) iam in awe of you . Cheers Graham
I'm english, emigrated to Adelaide in 1970 while really young, and returned to the UK 10 years ago.As yet I am undecided whether I'll return to Oz.I live in Wiltshire (where I was born)and its beautiful here.I work for NHS(hubby is store person). My family (In Oz)are nagging the living %£" for me to return home.My twin (lives in Adelaide)tells me there are loads of jobs?Yet whenever I have emailed job agencies I never once get a reply from them. After living in S.A for 30 years,I know what its all about. My ozzie mates ask "Why"if I tell them I want to return to Oz.They feel we are lucky to live in the UK and have the rest of europe on our doorstep.I think its such a personal choice where you live and where you'll be happiest.Australia is'nt better than the UK,its just different.I earn good money here and although its not everything,we manage fine and I know if we return to Oz,its going to hit us hard in every way and I don't know whether its worth it to be honest. Thanks for the honest post,it gives people a balanced view point.Hope all works out for you and keep us up to date.xx
I personally like to read threads like these cos it gives you a more realistic picture. Hope things pick up for you but from what I can gather for alot of us (particularly due to the down turn in the housing market etc) are facing a **** or bust situation. Let's hope it all goes to plan and just go for it I think you either sink or swim but I personally really feel for people who have made such a big life changing step to be disappointed lets hope things pick up for you
This is freaking me out a little, Being a graphic designer
What skills do you have, print or digital?
What skills do they want ?
I am happy to start at the bottom, had to here, where i live there was no jobs in GD so i started a business its doing well but will be leaving it behind to start again over there
Im not expecting my life to suddenly become perfect, i am just so dissuillusioned with the uk
You also state other things like lack of culture etc. I would put it to you that the culture is different rather than not existing.
Think of the reasons you made the move. If it was to become rich then you were mis informed.
I'm not sure if you are living here yet - so it is probably hard for you to judge. I did not come here to be rich - I came here to be happy. Struggling with trying to find money to pay my rent doesn't make me happy (I don't think it makes anyone happy) I am more angry because the government lies to people and says there are skills shortages when there may be - but there are no jobs! All I want to do is warn people that it really is not what they are being told. I guess you are lucky that you have a well paying job to come to. I really wish you all the best with it all - it sounds like you have the right attitude to succeed in Adelaide
