Hi, we have just heard that our Visas have been granted for South Australia. OMG, where do we go from here? We are new to this site.

My husband is a roofer by Trade and I am in Admin. We are prepared to do anything and work very hard to make our new life down under work.

Which areas of SA would you recommend/which areas are the best? Which areas are the best for employment in our fields? Our kids are very musical too.

Does anyone have any contacts we could approach?

Our minds are working overtime now. Anything anyone can help us with would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just a start, but I know I will have more questions later!!

Welcome to PIA

I hope you have an enjoyable time on here. Please ask our Team of Moderators for any help on here. Of course our PIA Admin Monkey is Tim he is in charge of the site. If there is any problems that Moderators can't handle (which is very unlikely) ask Tim.

Congratulations on your Visa. What subclass was it and when did you apply?

Congrats on your visa!

It's always hard to recommend suburbs as we all have different needs.

Take time to look through older threads in here and see what people say.

Most people will narrow it down but once they arrive they can then see these area "in the flesh"

You really have to see for your self:):)

Hi there, and welcome to PIA and Congratulations on the visa....

We arrived in November, and my oh is a roofer, his worked three days so far, and has a guy to phone next week for another job, hopefully, fingers crossed. I'm also in admin, but it's the kids summer holidays here at the moment, so I will be looking at the end of January.

As for area's, as Tyke said, everyone is different, you do really have to see for yourself.

Do you have kids?

Good luck.

Hiya,

We heard on 23rd Dec too! Wahoo!

We have booked our flights for 14th March. We have the house up for rent and have 4 shipping companies coming next week for quotes!

March still seems ages away to me but I know it will come round quickly. We have applied for on arrival accomodation from SA government so hopefully will get that and then have somewhere to set up and look for a rental.

We have 3 young children so I am looking for the impossible - the perfect home in the perfect area with the perfect school and close enough to work/ beach/ shops/ transport etc - and affordable!!! Haha, wish me luck! :jiggy:

Congratulations on your visa. Your heads will spin for weeks now but it will be a very exciting time. I just want to assure you, on the job front, that there are still jobs out there despite some people talking of a slow-down - especially if you are prepared to give anything a go to get started. I would recommend registering with every agency there is, as it has become obvious to me in recent times that the jobs you see in the newspaper only account for about 10% of the jobs out there. My step daughter and partner arrived November on working holiday visas, and partner had three interviews in his first 4 days here, got offered two jobs, started one early December and already is being nominated for a employer sponsored visa to stay and being paid approx $60K pa. He is 20 and had done one year on a trade apprenticeship in UK before being laid off. His job is with an electrical parts manufacturer and he is going to be trained to do lab work and technical things too. Each agency he spoke to said they had hundreds of jobs on their books. Give anything a go because I believe it is easier to get the job you want if you already have a job. Over the next few weeks I'm sure you'll get plenty of web links and ideas of areas to live, etc. good luck

Not sure how old your kids are but if they are secondary school age or nearing it, then there is a wonderful State High School in the eastern suburbs which specialises in music and has a fantastic reputation. It is called Marryatville High School - http://www.marryatvillehs.sa.edu.au/ - but do bear in mind that your best chance of getting a place there is by buying or renting long term in the catchment area of the school.

There are plenty of other schools with music specialties, but this is the best one I have looked at on behalf of clients. Many private schools also offer music scholarships, but for instance for entry into Year 8 at High School on such a scholarship, the child would need to apply at the start of Year 7/end of Year 6 (Year 8 is the first year of high schools at most schools here).

Thank you all so much for the useful information. Its great when we dont know where to start! Yes we have children 14 and nearly 10. They are both really keen and want to be in oz tomorrow! We will certainly have a look at the info you have provided us. Keep it coming - anything small that you think may help will be brilliant.

Hi Jo-marnes, well done on the IELTS test - my husband sat it and got a high score too 8. He was so chuffed. Alot of years since he has been too school and he hates being in a classroom test environment!!
