Hi y'all,

Just thought I'd drop some lines in a thread here to introduce ourselves to you lovely guys.

My name is Jamie and my OH is Carrie, aged 32 and 31 respectively (why do I sound like I am applying for something? :P )

We are users of britishexpats and found that site a huge help and the people lovely also. I think there are a few users from there on here also, I'm sure.

But since we have finally arrived in Adelaide (Dec 3rd), I think it's high time to join this great community also! Already met a few welcoming people already who have added us as friends on facebook and also invited us to a meet up this week. ScooterDan and Suzer...I thank you!

:notworthy:

We're currently hostelling at the moment..a fantastic hostel near the south terrace and have been here all the while. As much as we want to move out to our own dwellings, it's more financially viable for us to stay here until I have secured work on a permanent basis.

Carrie is currently working as a nurse in a private hospital which she loves already. And I am still looking. With the holiday season just gone it 'was' pretty hard to find something of any real value however I have an iron in the fire and fingers crossed I can make it good and come out the other side with employment. I have to say that I have had so many jobs in the past and it STILL doesn't get any easier when applying, going for interviews. My stomach is churning right now at the prospect!!!!!

We're only temp residents but are hoping to turn that into perm residents very soon!

I think Australia will be a great place to bring up a family and we love the laid back lifestyle and warmer climate.

So to conclude...

A BIG HELLO to all you PIA'ers..hope to meet more of you soon to share a tale or two!

:jiggy:

Hello and welcome to PIA. As you know from the other Expats site, you will get lots of help/information if you ask for it. There is a socialising section that is always worth looking at and hopefully you will meet up with other PIA users soon. Take care and good luck with the job hunting.

Hi Jamie & Carrie,

We're fairly new on here too, and I must say everyone is sooooo friendly and helpful.

I'm Karen (33 just!!), Hubby is Jason (32), Callum (nearly 2!!!) and Travis the dog (5), we're not in Adelaide yet, we are waiting for visa to be granted and unfortunately I think we're in for a long wait!!! Being on here just makes me want to be there now!!!! Patience I know!!! Our visa 175 was lodged back in October 08'.

Anyway, I hope all goes well with the job front, and i'm glad Carrie is settled in her job. Where are you hoping to move to over there??? I have family in McLaren Vale and Hallett Cove so we shall probably go around that area, but, it all depends on work for Jason, he is a Landscape Gardener so wherever he gets work is where we will go, it is daunting having to apply for work again.

So keep in touch and it's nice to be in contact with you.

Take Care

Karen & Jasonxx

Hi Karen,

Just PM'd you a welcome!

In answers to your questions...

staying at a hostel in the city (lovely place believe it or not but as we're a couple it works well. Probably not the best with a child and pooch in tow)

We hope to move out when I have secured permanent employment. Carrie is the bredwinner though and we came here on a 457 visa as Carrie's hospital (she is a nurse) have sponsored us. Hoping to find (rent) somewhere cosy eventually in the eastern suburbs but competition is fierce for property here.

Loving it here (its quite familiar to me in some ways as I backpacked here in 2004/2005 and its my 3rd time in total) but can be lonesome, even in the hostel, as friends you make eventually move on...hence why we're here on this brill place. Totally sh*ting myself for this job interview im going for on Thursday cos I really need this job so bad and it would be something I'd enjoy and the money aint half bad either.

Im from Liverpool and Carrie is from Wrexham, but we both lived in Manchester! :v_SPIN:

If you have anything else to ask, then please feel free! :jiggy:

Hi Kris,

Thank you mate for the invitation, much appreciated. Noticed you live in Glenelg.

Lovely Sub there...we can only dream of owning property out there. Good on ya for finding somewhere sweet like that.

I think Carrie PM'd you back...we'll be at the griffins tomorrow so looking forward to seeing you there.

Till then...

Jamie

I didn't want to double up on 'Hi' threads, but would like to say "Hi" and am new to the site - had a REAL bad experience with 'another' UK Expats forum last year that I won't mention (unless asked :) ) and did not return to a UK Expat forum board for over 12 months (this is my first outing back onto the 'horse'), my first experiences were so bad, full of trolls and in-fighting.:realmad:

I went back and took a look, they were still at it ! And all I was trying to do was help out, having been here 8 years, I thought I might give back and also maybe find some new mates. Never thought that I would be unlucky enough with my first foray to chance upon the worst place to do so !

Anyway, I get the feeling that this place is a bit different and nicer, so I'm looking forward to coming here instead of 'there'....I am sure you can guess the site.

Hiya mate,

Welcome to PIA. Yes, you could say that the 'atmos' is a wee bit friendlier here but alot of us have used the this website you speak of ourselves. BE it me or Carrie...

;)

However I found the majority of people on there to be really nice, affable and helpful, especially a lovely lady called Wendy who emailed me a sample resume that I could use has a template to create my own 'aussie' CV. It worked well cos I got an interview date within 24 hours of applying! (I must email her, but if she is reading this...thanks! I think she is living in Adelaide to).

BUT yes, there are people who hound the forums and like to 'pick' at peoples posts and take great pleasure is putting the sh*ts up people or telling them they're wrong and how much they hate things in Australia with alot of venom sometimes. I don't personally understand it really. They come out here for a better life you would imagine, yet they crow on about how the UK is fantastic and they miss so much of it and that alot of Aussie ways are backward and they can't or sometimes 'won't' adapt.

Why come here then?? You wouldn't come here for a career, thats what I can tell you. Alot of people i have found that come here for career are sadly jaded as they have to take wage cuts and adapt to more laid back working styles and yes you could say a 'old fashioned' way of doing things in the workplace.

We came for a better work/life balance and an outdoorsy lifestyle. So far we're pretty happy with things.

But hey ho...no matter which forum you go on regarding any subject you will find peeps like this...so we just have to deal with it.

I'll get off my soapbox now but....

WELCOME!!!!

Hey there, which hostel are you staying in, are they shared rooms or is here doubles? Myself and my OH are in he process of applying and a hostel would be fine for us when we 1st land as only have ourselves to consider.

Welcome! I also had a bit of an 'experience' on another forum, quite minor but all the same annoying to say the least, I just reasoned to myself how on earth can people who have written like 15000 posts on a forum even have the time to outside and actually see what the country is like!!! LOL I thought it was just me, glad to hear I am not the only one who was a bit fazed!

Hostel 109 on Carrington st in the city.

Good people here as there are long termers who also work like Carrie so in the week it can be quiet.

But as the summer is in full swing, backpackers are on the move heading to places other than Sydney and Brisbane and the east coast..namely here so we can't control all the wild kids who come here but for the majority you could do a helluva lot worse as some hostels here are backpacker wild every nite places. Not here. The ones who want that, that stay here, eventually leave.

So all in all its a good place and we've been here 5 weeks now so it can't be that bad at all.

Malcolm and Toni (father/daughter operators) are good people and Abhi (nite manager) is a lovely lad to.

Consider it.

If you have to pick a hostel then pick this one.

:)

Oh and you can have a double or a twin or share.... if ya with the OH..I would get a double.

Works out $50 per nite. (£20) or $325 per week if you stay long term. Its great for us whilst i find perm employment and also suss out which area we wanna move to.

Tip: (I might get shot down for this) Anywhere north of north Adelaide isn't worth considering....trust me.

Jamie

Thanks! Just gave their website quick look, one for me to bookmark. Nice and cheap without being too crazy, when you are trying to head out and work or keep a clear head the last thing you need is people ripping about all night
