  1. Way back, when I first arrived, there were lots of meet ups arranged that helped to meet new people and form some lasting friendships and a good support network, a few of us from that era are taking the chance to catch up and welcome all who want a bit of a night out. You may meet someone in a similar location and situation to yourself and form a new lifelong freindship - you may also just have a pleasant night out and never meet up again, either way, its all good. Friday dec 2 at the Victoria hotel, O'Halloran Hill from 8pm Let me know if you are coming so I'm not Billy no mates and so that I have an idea of numbers and I'll try reserve a space!
  2. I buy one every other year generally, save more than the cost of the book, and give vouchers I won't use away. Makes you go places you might not try without a voucher too. thinking about online version this year as I do agree that otherwise there are vouchers you may have used but don't Good to read people are liking the app version, I believe it also keeps track of what you save?
  3. I think there are mixed comments on this thread, several of them appear to be far from factually correct and I wonder if this thread should be allowed to continue to run or even remain? In commenting that is a business is closing that is apparently not, could cause them unnecessary harm, which doesn't seem very fair. Especially as there appear to be rules about that sort of thing? I know they used this site to promote themselves a LOT before they opened, but not sure all the negative comments are a good thing.
  4. with the older ones I wouldn't worry too much. with the 4 year old, if they are going to be unable to start school, I would look at putting them in one of the good private school's ELC, they appear to be more structured to learning than a lot of kindys (but I have no personal experience with an ELC) Don't know if it would be possible to combine this with a kindy too, so they have 5 full days education each week so as to not lose that habit
  5. off topic a little, but just had a cornish pasty at Port wakefield. First bakery on the left as you are heading north. Best Cornish Pasty. Other pies were good too.
  6. expressway is often closed during the day at the moment! Hope you manage to make the long journey OK, the real danger is once you have visited you may want to stay
  7. If the school has already said they will take him in term 4 and move him up as a year 1, then I wouldn't worry about missing the first couple of weeks of term. I would just make the plans that best suit your family. You are lucky, the schools in our area point blank refused to accept my child in the similar circumstances I moved my kids school this year and they missed a week at the start of term, then a couple more kids joined a week or so after - its no biggy here. (as I am sure you already know).
  8. try http://www.transglobalexpress.co.uk
  9. thats awesome - thanks for that
  10. Bruce n Sheila I was interested in visiting the visitor centre after you last mentioned it, and searched for info at the time, it appeared then (and now) that the centre is only open to schools or groups (pretty sure they don't mean a group of family and friends there!) which is a real shame.
  11. As snifter says, reciprocal agreement nod your travel insurance should cover the $800+ ambulance bill if necessary
  12. I understand the government is concerned about people going into retirement and are placing the burden on the employer to rectify this problem, however, my concern with this is that it will begin to impact on the number of people an organisation employs, as their wage bill is going to increase by at least 3%, maybe they will just start trimming staff?? Especially in an environment that is getting harder and harder to operate in cost wise.
  13. Try the fruit mart over at ohalloran hill
  14. There are road rides every Saturday morning from tailwind cycles, reynella. I think meet time is 7 am at he moment. Tommorow there Is a Gt demo day at craigburn farm trails If you are interest in test riding some of the gts. 8-3pm. You need your pedals, helmet, driving licence and credit card to test ride.
  15. if you know the area you will be settling in, it might be worth contacting the nearest hospital now, to try and get booked in to the system, assuming you are going public. I didn't even bother going to the Dr's here till 12 weeks and then struggled to get appointments on schedule at the hosptial in the early days, as it was pretty full. If you want the nuchal fold scan, the timing is pretty exact and whilst scans are quick to get, it may pay to have a referral ready if you can manage it? I would say the public system might be best, as when I was around 19 weeks, I was also told it would be difficult to get a private obstetrician to take me on at that stage. Public care was excellent, free and I would recommend. I was on a temp visa at the time, the UK has a reciprocal agreement with Aus for necessary care. I went to Flinders Medical Centre. as mentioned, post delivery, there is practically no support at home like you may have experienced in the UK.
  16. wednesday and friday are best for me
  17. visitors came with them at Christmas, liked them, planes were pretty empty, but is was boxing day. They didn't have a stopover
  18. Food land stock a king island dairy pure cream in an oval tub that is very thick and nearest thing I have found
  19. would like to meet for walks, but I don't have teenage children
  20. Sophia, can you expand at all on why Aberfoyle is so bad? Aberfoyle has had a bad name, but the latest 'word on the street' is that it is improving vastly because of a new principal, whereas Blackwood was great and then I have 'heard' it is known as Smackwood High and there are also bullying issues. My experience and opinion is limited to hearsay. Up to date opinions are great. Personally I think there are good and bad at all schools and sometimes a reputation can linger that is no longer deserved It would be great to hear from more people like Sophia who have had kids go through or at a particular school, or who know people who attend the schools.
  21. It does mean exactly that. 10 week terms here. then 2 weeks off until summer hols which can be 6 or 7 weeks long (longer for private schools) It works great I think, kids seem to deal with it fine, and I love 2 week blocks off school So, no there is no half term in march, next hols are around easter Edit: if it is because you need time off for your kids in March, don't stress, just let school know, they don't seem overly fussed, as long as it is for a reason, not just to sit at home watching tv or something
  22. I do agree to a large extent. I am also noticing an increasing number of people who come on, ask advice or a favour and then never respond to their original post let alone continue to contribute. Over the past 6 months I have offered to help people out several times, and the OP never even appears to return to the post. There was one poster asked for someone to urgently view and give opinion on a rental, I offered to do so on their post, messaged them and still got no response. Hmmm, makes you not bother again. I do have more to do with my days was just trying to be helpful cos I remember how hard it can be starting out. However, common courtesy, even if it is a no thanks, but thanks for the offer would often be appreciated.
  23. we went last weekend. Sea was lovely to cool down, as it was very hot, flat, calm, goes deep fairly quickly, beach is very small stones. Fishing was excellent form the jetty! Campsite was pretty crowded, noise only went on till just before 3am! but it was on the other side of the campsite to us, so not too bad, however, loud dawn chorus thanks to nature then started for about half an hour about 6.30am There are not really any facilities, so take everything with you. There are flushing toilets, that appear to be checked regularly, but the taps don't work overly well and there is no soap and stuff, so very basic. there some community BBQ's, but didn't use them. Kids had a good time, Would I go again? I would but not in a hurry.
