  3. Hi thereMy situation is a bit complicated so bear with me but we would appreciate some advice from those who live in Adelaide currently. We moved to Melbourne 2.5 years ago and recently had our daughter (6mo). We are currently in the UK on a visit making the most of my maternity leave. My hubby doesn't particularly enjoy his job in Melbourne and was hoping for a change of career (currently a Plumber). Whilst in the UK he's been offered two jobs - one offshore working out of Aberdeen for £60K and one in Adelaide working for an oil company for $73K (while he trains). With both options I wouldn't be working. We love being back in the UK with family and friends and seeing our baby girl with them is priceless. We could be very comfortable here on that wage. We don't know much about Adelaide but know things would be tight on 73K and with no family or friends and at home all day with a baby, would I go mad? I just don't know. We don't particularly love Melbourne, it's too big for us and it's gloomy for most of the winter. Can anyone give any advice on Adelaide and family friendly suburbs maybe with lots of Brits? Thanks

  5. Anyone interested in this? Town Picnic Saturday 12th April 2014 - 11am-5pm Rymill Park Sounds like it's going to be a great family event (you can even bring your dog) - free entry - bring your own picnic or pre-order one online. Here's the website with the info: http://adelaidefoodandwinefestival.org/home/portfolio/townpicnic/ Also there will be a “how to drink wine with an excitable dog” wine class for dogs and owners in the foodie dog arena at 2.15pm - how good is that?! Would love to meet people there - we have a fair few PIA's going already so you won't be on your own - don't worry if you don't know anyone - that's the point! And if you DO know people, then great!! Who's up for it?
  6. Hi all, Not sure if this is the place to post this, so happy to be redirected if the mods think it's appropriate. I just wanted a bit of advice from other PIAs who might be / have been in this situation. Hubs & I have been out here since 2011 & recently bought a house so looks like we're staying His family are pretty happy for us, his parents visit every couple of years, they have another son & grandkids nearby them so no issues there. My family, however, are quite elderly & were pretty angry & sad when I emigrated, I am an only child & they regarded it as kind of a betrayal and still bear me a fair bit of resentment We went back to visit them last year & stayed with them (at their request) and all was a disaster, with them expecting us to spend our entire time drinking coffee sat on their sofa, & me & hubs obviously wanting to catch up with the old buddies, go out drinking, come back late etc. It was not pleasant. Due to some health scares recently I want to take a trip back next year to hopefully see them before there's no more opportunity, and leave things on good terms. Hubs doesn't want to come & I don't blame him, plus I have 2 more weeks a/l per year than him so makes sense for me to use it this way and him to stay home & look after our dogs. However I don't want to stay in the "family home" after last time, and suggested I book a holiday apartment nearby & see my relatives every day for coffee, lunch, whatever, but then have my own space for friends and drinking in the evenings (all at my own expense, of course). My elderly relatives have gone mad about this to the point they don't want to see me unless it's on their terms, ie. staying under their roof. I've no idea why they want this as a) it made them mad last time when I stayed, and b) I personally wouldn't want someone in my house who didn't want to be there. Hubs suggests I just go ahead & book my flights & accommodation & they will come round. I think this is probably true but it seems an expensive gamble, and while I'd love to catch up with my old mates etc & could easily fill 2 weeks in my home city without family input, my primary reason for visiting is to see them. Alternatively I could wait and see if they have a change of heart in the next 6 months. Or I could just not bother (which is what I'm tempted to do now - spend my money & a/l doing something I would enjoy, but I am sure I would regret that in years to come). Sorry this is a long post but has anyone been in this situation who could advise? Either on here or by pm? I would really appreciate it :-) Kat

  8. Dear all, I have been offered tentatively a position in September at the University of Adelaide. I am looking into childcare as I don't want to leave my little girl with just anyone. She will be 2 by this time. I went to see a carer yesterday and to say I was HORRIFIED is an understatement. I could not believe this carer was accredited - the house was dirty, too small for her numbers, and T.V.s were in every room, cats milling about. Horrid. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? We will likely be living in Broadview, so ideally somewhere near there. We have an amazing carer in the UK that basically treats my little girl as part of her family and that is what I am keen for. An alternative is we use the University of Adelaide childcare centre, but first impressions (by email) are not great. Any help appreciated. I am really anxious about this. Thank you, Sarah

    Rented Accomodation required

Hi We are a family of 6 (2 adults 4 children)....our visa has just been granted:biggrin: We are aiming to arrive in Adelaide June/July We are looking to rent temporarily maybe up to 6 months just to establish ourselves. Any help, advice or leads would be great Thank you
  11. Hi All, We have been in SA for about two years and have had our own little Aussie arrival here, a little boy now 1. Unfortunately, we are a little isolated from people and are struggling to meet up with like minded people and make friends. We are 41 and 37, and into most normal things - sport, socialising, eating and drinking. Anyone fancy meeting up, bearing in mind we cant get babysitters and the little one does go to sleep about 7pm. ( The joys of parent hood) Mark and Kristal
  12. I'll try and keep this short(ish). Like most others having become increasingly fed up with life in the UK and having 'casually' researched the possibility over recent months a quirk of fate has made the possibility of emigrating to Australia become a reality and we are seriously considering making the move. Having researched a few of the major cities and surrounding suburbs we are keen on Adelaide from what we've seen. We are a family of 4 with two sons both aged under 7. It is looking likely that I will be able to obtain a job based on my skills in Australia and more specifically Adelaide. My wife is a Teacher (Secondary/High School) and from what I've seen she would be able to find work relatively easily (?). I suppose what I'm asking for is: - Similar stories of small/young families making the move in recent years - Are Teaching jobs easy/hard to come by - Areas/Suburbs to consider/avoid - Quality of schooling - Any hints/tips/advice on anything relevant - Most importantly the lifestyle, after all this is the main reason for the move - One word to best describe South Australian or Adelaide Life. Thanks in anticipation. Ross Family

  14. Hi We are a family of four who arrived in Adelaide in January this year. We moved into an unfurnished 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 garage low maintenance detached modern property in Nairne in February. We have now bought our own property and so the rental property is being marketed as available from 12 October 2009 for $315/wk. It may be possible for a new tenant to take over our lease ie. only be tied in for the balance of about 3 months, otherwise it is a standard 12mth contract. It's no big deal if you need to break the contract (as we have) just a couple of hundred dollars re-advertising costs. Details of the property can be found at http://www.realestate.com.au Click the RENT tab and enter this property ID in the search box: 403089828 It's in a fantastic location with local amenities within walking distance eg. convenience store, post office, playground, nature reserve, school, hardware store, pharmacy, fish & chip shop, two cafes, pizzeria and an indian restaurant. Just 10 minutes away is Mt Barker with supermarkets, banks etc. Adelaide city is just 20 minutes down the freeway. Email me if you would like any further information. Best regards, Andrew
