GP in Western Suburbs

    Recommended Posts

    Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a decent GP in Semaphore/Largs/Port Adelaide/West Lakes area. I don't have a car yet and so am pretty restricted to how far I want to travel to see the Dr. There is one on Semaphore Road but it looks a bit run down and not sure if I want to use it.

Also ladies what is the deal here with getting a smear test done? I was due to have one just before we left the UK in January but didn't have time to fit it in. Just wondered if I can just phone up and book one without seeing a GP first.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi FLutterby

Can't help with a GP as I am still looking for a good western suberbs one- if I find one I will let you know.

As for smears it depends where you want to have them done but either way you need to get a referal from your GP and they can either refer you to a Gyneo (usually private) or you can go to pathology centre like Gribbles and have it done there. If you are going to a Path centre make sure you ring first as they have specialist nurses to take the smears and they seem to rotate between centres. Once you have a referal it lasts a year. You can have them done at the Womens and Childrens hosp as well with a referal (they do them on a Tuesday I think and its a sit and wait situation!)

    Hope that helps

    Nic

Thanks for this Nic - that makes it much clearer, still no further on with a GP although spotted one on Port Road in Hindmarsh which is on my way to work which I might try out. I think the inner snob in me comes out with GPs, I like nice shiny medical centres!!!!

Thanks for this Mick and Helen.

We don't have a car yet so would probably involve 2 buses but will bear it in mind for when we finally get ourselves sorted.

All the doctors in this area joined together about 4 years ago and work out of the same building - Primary Old Port, 1202 Old Port Road, Royal Park. Tel 84470000. They always take new patients. They open 7am to 10pm, 7 days per week.

You don't need an appointment, just turn up and there are up to 16 doctors. I see Dr Patrick O'Leary and cannot recommend him highly enough. Also seen Dr Graham Thorpe. You can see who-ever is available or ask for a specific doctor - your choice. They also have nurses in the clinic, for stitches, simple broken arms etc, blood tests, assisting with smears, etc, full scanning facilities on site, skin cancer screening and removal of suspect moles on site, pharmacy on site, dentist onsite and more.

When they first joined forces at the new premisies, they offered a pick-up service for people without cars, but I don't know if this is still available. If it is non-urgent, maybe ring first to see how long the wait is and how many doctors are on duty at that time. Early evening is generally quiet, as is early Saturday and Sunday morning.

Best of all, they bulk bill so you don't have to pay a cent when you go - even on weekends.

    Cheers, Karen
