Grr! Poms!

Hmmn, I suppose I had better explain a couple of things :)

Tappy's is the local bottle shop - the one in the Village as opposed to the Hub.

Accents - don't give a toss where anyone originates, but I guess Diane had a point; perhaps if you have kids with a marked accent, whether Essex or Northern, and they are out cruising round the Hub, it might be an idea to check on them lol.

The thing with accents is that they clearly identify where that person originated. Northern/cockney is an easy way for Australians to describe kids that have affected them in some way, and unfortunately I believe that that could affect the way English immigrants are viewed. My kids and I are less likely to stand out as being from the UK as we have soft southern accents lol so I might be described (once again!) as a fat mole that had done something rather than a pom.

As for the person that seemed to think I was implying Aussie kids are angels, I can absolutely assure you I am not! I work with a lot of kids, all of whom are brilliant but some have anti-social tendencies. Most of the people we socialise with are Australian (don't care, it's just we're in Australia!) and they judge the Australian kids a little differently from migrant ones. For example, I know of one 'crew' all of whom do the same thing - underage drinking, graffitti etc - but the one who is judged the hardest, and is seen as the ringleader*, is an Essex boy. Many parents we know do not want their kids hanging with this boy because of his behaviour, although they are happy for them to be with the Australians. I think they view it as rude to come to a country, then make yourself known for doing the wrong thing, instead of having a positive influence on your new home. For sure, you can have heaps of Australian friends, but sometimes these kids pick up with the kids on the outskirts, whose behaviour marks them out as needy, friendless or 'naughty'. And I'm saying 'sometimes', I know it's not the norm.

Better? :wubclub: LC

* I believe that each person that does wrong is responsible for their own actions; don't care if there is a leader!

Wholeheartedly agree, for a change!

I would like to add that BRITISH accents DO get confused here, and even northern kids like mine are sometimes asked if they are from such divergent parts of the (y)UK like London, Newcastle and, shudder, Manchester!..................befor anyone freaks, it was a gentle aside, not a real slander, ok?:err:

Still think accents should not be mentioned in the original post. Both insulting and inappropriate.Implications are that those from East and West of the UK are somehow better than us Northerners and Southerners. What a pile of old Crap.

Total nonsense! Like it or not your accent is a distinguishing feature - just like your height, your hair colour/length, your skin colour..... It narrows down the field to enable easier identification. Let's not get into that daft politically correct thing about not being able to mention something really obvious that helps to identify the culprit. Where you come from and how you speak makes no difference at all to the type of person you are, and the original poster wasn't implying that in any way. It's an identifiying factor to an individual. Get over it and lose the chip on your shoulder!!

My accent here gets picked on alot, but hey ho, I can`t change it because I`m proud of where I come from , so it doesn`t bother me:)

Its a shame my kids are getting a more `Aussie ` accent and sometimes they take the mick too :biglaugh:

Warning, what follows is a little light rib-poking; anyone easily offended or prone to getting on soapboxes should look away now.

Slander is verbal; it's libel when written. A Mancunian would know the difference ;)

sorry to be pedantic, (no i'm not ) but slander is verbal when it is unrecorded and can't be reproduced, libel can be verbal when it can be reproduced for example on a radio show recording, an anwer phone. The laws date from before the technology was around to record the spoken work on a routine basis.:):):)

It was with some caution that I responded, suspecting as I did that my loose definition might be seized upon. I am aware of the 'permanently recorded' test that applies when determining which is the proper of the two, but for the purpose of my (rather witty) post I thought it appropriate to stick to a basic distinction. Still, your pedantry has been duly noted ...:goofy:

I don't feel this thread is going anywhere, does anyone consider many of these posts help? If you want to get at each other maybe swap phone numbers! Otherwise use your energy to offer much needed advise and support.

Thanks

If you look back through the forum you will find a very similar thread from a few years ago. The same arguement occurred then by someone missing the point. The fact that someone has a distinctive accent whether it is scouse, geordie, cockney, etc means that they are identified immeadiately as being a pom. It is not suggesting that poms from one part of the old country are better or worse behaved then poms from another.

Accents - don't give a toss where anyone originates,

The thing with accents is that they clearly identify where that person originated. Northern/cockney is an easy way for Australians to describe kids that have affected them in some way, and unfortunately I believe that that could affect the way English immigrants are viewed. My kids and I are less likely to stand out as being from the UK as we have soft southern accents lol so I might be described as a fat mole* that had done something rather than a pom.

How much clearer can I make it, Sueoc? Thank goodness Diane gets it (as in my point!)...otherwise I'd have to suspect I am writing in a different language :cute:!

Ok, how about another (non-pommie) example. There was a fight a while back at school. Both kids were suspended (of course) but one is identified as a 'wog'. The opinion has been voiced by a few (Australian ok?) parents that this kid hangs with other wogs and has threatened to bring his extended family in....and those parents have actually become concerned that we might have a potential Cronulla situation blossoming in Adelaide!

Over-reaction? Certainly, but IMHO it just serves to illustrate how Australians -or any nationality - I'm sure it happens in the UK too- can bag a whole heap of immigrants together by identifying one characteristic. And no, it's not fair but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

My original post wasn't intended to start a slanging match. I guess I worry that we will be seen as a negative influence on an area. Let's face it, poor old Elizabeth still carries a poor rep from all those years ago.

Pax,

Caroline.

* I'm not particularly fat and I'm certainly not a mole, but years ago was described as such by some Aussie kids! Obviously they'd been drinking......:biglaugh:

I'm from Essex - everyone from there is notorious for having no manners and telling it like it is!
