Urgent - car stamp duty for imported vehicle

    Hi

We have brought our TVR sports car with us, it has had all the paperwork done and passed inspection. My husband just went to get get the car registration and collect the number plates and they are asking for a whopping $2300!! they say the reason the fee is so high is because it is a first time registration and we need to pay stamp duty. The car is a 1993 model (so not new!) and street value of $20-25000. So hardly the latest model (it is husband's baby so we brought it over for emotional reasons). Would be grateful if anyone has had a new imported car registered recently how much they paid? Maybe this is how much it costs, but in none of the research we made this cost was mentioned to be so high. We paid less for shipping and import duty combined!!

Depends on how long you got your rego for, etc but that sounds a bit right. Stamp duty will be $60 for the first $3000 price or in your case value and then 4% of the remaining roughly $22,000 plus your price of number plates and your rego or road tax which includes 3rd party insurance only (and that's just if someone you hit gets injured NOT their car so make sure you get fully comp quickly) depends on value and engine size, etc. The rego can be purchased for 3 or 6 or 12 months but is certainly more expensive than the UK. I would assume they would have broken down for you at motor vehicles. Did that also include your changing your license over because that's not cheap either!

I recall being shocked at having to pay over $2k on a car with a $25k valuation.

For a specialist car, I'd strongly recommend Shannons for insurance. They will give you an agreed value policy (rather than market value) with a load of extras, and know their cars.

Thanks Cafehag and others, satisfied that we haven't paid more than we should have now. Still quite shocked by how expensive it was though. :err:

Yes we have already gone with Shannons for insurance - fully comp for an 8 cylinder sports car for $790, the best deal we found!
