    Hi,

Right, well we have just returned from the Down Under Live Expo at Leeds Armouries and we are slightly disappointed. We are in a bit of a quandary and just wondered if any of you lovely people wanted to give us some words of wisdom. Today was meant to answer so many questions for us but it has just creating more LOL!

We spoke to a migration expert for a free assessment and things have changed since my OH last looked at our visa situation.

We thought we were sitting pretty points wise on the Skilled Migration Visa but they have since scrapped the MODL (-15pts) which leaves us slightly short. We can still apply for this visa if my OH takes the English Language Test . My OH's job (Mechanical Engineer) in on the CSOL at the moment but we also heard there are to be drastic changes June 2010. Does anybody have any 'insider' information on whether they think a Mechanical Engineer will still appear on the SOL or CSOL after June 2010?

Our other option is to get a employer sponsored visa but I am expecting a baby in July 2010 and from what we have heard if my OH get sponsored the process can be a lot faster which could leave me tying up things in the UK with a 3 year old and a newborn (not a task I would be looking forward too!). Has anybody got sponsored employment and if so how long did the process take? How did you find sponsors, agencies/ mailing companies etc?

If applicable did you still have to have a skills assessment?

    Thanks

    Hi,

have you had your skills assessed yet ? which ever visa you choose you should start the process while you can, you never know how visa regulations will change and you may no longer qualify for a visa at all.

    Get started soon:idea:

I agree if you know you want to emmigrate then you should start the process asap as the rules are changing all the time. I would def look at getting PR 176 if you can as with a young family the extra benefit you can get will be helpful.

I think if you go for a 176 it can be quite quick aroun 4-6 months but don't quote me as everyone's experience is different.

If you are looking to get sponsored you could always aske to wait until August once the baby is here.

    good luck

Note also that you can lodge a subclass 175 visa application with 100 points and move across to a 176 once you have secured State or Territory Sponsorship.

    Best regards.

    Hi,

Go for it now whilst you can, I too am qualified in Engineering and i got state sponsorship and i got my visa in just under 8mths. This was last year before the changes though so things are a bit different now. Go for the 176 perm visa if you can. As for the benefits i thought you had to be in Oz for two years before you could claim child tax credits etc.

Sponsored visas are pretty hard to come by and you get very few (if any) financial benefits. We are on a 2 year 457 sposored visa but it was sheer luck that my hubby was offered the job and sponsored straight away - took about 3 weeks for the visa to come through so it is much quicker.

The PR would probably be a better bet for you. They keep changing the rules every few months so take the plunge and get started as soon as. Good Luck!!

Actually employer sponsored subclass 457 visas can come with significant financial benefits if the tax free Living Away From Home Allowance is included in the salary package.

Added to which, living in Australia as the holder of a 457 visa means that only Australian source income and gains are taxable in Australia.

The main downside to a 457 visa is the condition that requires you to only work for the sponsoring employer.

    Best regards.
