Should the jack go

    Recommended Posts

I have spoken to a few Aussies about this especially the older generation and they say they should keep it.....one says had it not be for GB then Aus wouldnt be ehat it is today.....

I would add the aboriginal flag as a back drop instead of the blue then that would make alot of people happier too.

    But thats just my opinion.

I think they should have something in the colours of green and gold - after all, that's what all the national teams wear as their colours! Mind you, I quite like having a day off for the Queen's Birthday here, so wouldn't really like to give that up if Australia stopped acknowleging her soverienty by dropping the Union Jack on the Aussie flag!

Instead of the old hags birthday we could have an Aboriginal Day.

    Lol Django!

I can't see what relevence the Union Jack has to us now. I couldn't believe the results of the last referendum - I would certainly vote to sever those ties...and the expense that goes with them!

We were talking about this a few weeks ago, but no-one could really agree then either.

I don't think the green-and-gold idea works as there was a fair bit of controversy, I believe, when those colours were introduced. As for having the Aboriginal flag incorporated...what about the Torres Strait Islanders flag? Wouldn't that have to be added too?

So, I can't think of what I would add...but I know what I'd omit lol!

You're right Pete. It's the Union flag.

It's only called the Union Jack when it's been flown at sea.

    Whooooo Hoooooooo :jiggy:

10/10 go to the top of the class.:D

It does wind me up that Brits don't even know what their flag is called. :realmad:

    Regards the Referendum:

Correct me if I'm wrong butthe majority of Australians at the time did (and still do) believe we will become a Republic:

The referendum failed because we were asked whether we wanted that particular (and arguably, rather peculiar) Republican Model.

Not surprisingly, most of us were befoozled by the 30 page document that was sent out to explain the wording of the Constitional Amendments... the document made reading the fine print in your insurance policy seem really clear- cut by comparison.

    - You will recall that a lot of people got really upset that the proposal was that candidates for the position of " President" had to be vetted by the Federal Political Parties (presumaly to avoid the sort of Presidential Campaigns we see in the US).

Unfortunately, there are now lots of Poms in the UK who believe Australians are committed to stay a Constitutional Monarchy till the cows come home.

Perhaps we shoud disabuse them of this notion by getting the flag cahnged ASAP.

I remember there was a big debate about this when I lived here before in the 90s.

I personally think Australian should have its own flag without the Union flag in it, but the problem is that the current Australian flag is very attractive - the Union Flag is a good design in itself, which is why so many designers and artists have used it. Also thousands of Australians have fought and died for that flag, so there is a huge emotional attachment to it.

It is interesting to look through alternative designs, unfortuantely some of them look like qantas logos ! THis one is pretty good, with the aboriginal flag replacing the Union flag - see Other Designs

These countries's flags also include the Union flag, but we could all pretend history never happened to fit in with some good old brit bashing.

Bot none of the above are as big as Australia and they probably are looked after by the UK. Australia doesn't need the UK anymore.

Then how come we have so many "get me down under" expos and visa specialists here in the UK practically begging us to go over? (Apart from the obvious "we want some of your hard earned cash first")

The flag of Hawaii, one of the states of the USA, also has the Union Flag in the top lefthand corner, to symbolise Hawaii's long relationship/frienship with Great Britain. Not a member of the commonwealth, apparantly King Kamehameha wanted it that way.

    Interesting but true.

Interesting where this belief comes from. From what I have read and people I have spoken to, they all seem to be suprised that the flag has not been ditched earlier or a become republic.

The Queen, the Union flag, the Commonwealth, are an anachronism for modern Australia, it wld be like the British having an Italian flag present on the Union flag bcos of Roman rule. Viva la Revolution and hasten the Australian Republic.
