    Hi Stephanie,

I'm on a 457 visa and I've just received my 1st letter for food allowance on LAHFA. When I move to my long term rental then I can claim for my rental costs.

I'm sure that LAFHA is part of the 457 visa conditions.

I now have both food allowance and Rental allowance.

How it works is the if your allowance for food 14k and rental is 15k = 29k

and say your salary is 100k then they take 29k off your salary before you get taxed.

    100k

    - 29k

So 71k will be taxed and the 29k is tax free.

    Hope I've explained it right

HAve just heard about this where do you get the info from and how do you go about getting such an allowance? Have been here since end of Jan and been paying rent since then (and before but still in uk) Trying to do a tax return at moment which is bad enough a way of getting anything else back would be good as money tight. Hope someone can help.
