anyone know if you can import a car on a 457 visa or do you have to have permanent residency first?? we intend to apply for permanent residency once we're over but initially going on the 457........and am I right in thinking you have to have owned the car for 12 months? could we ship the car over a couple of months after we arrive?

I guess any info on shipping a car would be appreciated....and apologies if this has already been done!!

We wanted to ship a Vespa scooter over but were told no on a temp visa. We could do it once we got perm residency but would have to prove we'd been driving it in the 12 months prior to shipping - impossible.

We bought our motorcycle over in 2007 (was it really that long ago!) while on a 495 visa which was temporary. The only issue with the temporary visa is that if for some reason you do not get a permanent visa you have to take the vehicle back to where it came from on leaving the country.

    Have a look here

    Eligibility Criteria

    Criteria, citizenship and visa requirements

Applicants must fall into one of the following categories. You must:

    • be an Australian citizen; or
    • have applied to become an Australian citizen; or
    • be an Australian permanent resident (eg, hold a permanent visa); or
    • have applied to become an Australian permanent resident (eg, applied for a permanent visa); or
    • hold a visa that allows you to apply to become an Australian permanent resident (eg, hold a temporary visa that allows you to apply for a permanent visa); or otherwise
    • be entitled to remain in Australia indefinitely (eg, be a New Zealand citizen).

In addition, applicants must intend to change their residence. Applicants must have been resident in a foreign country (throughout the qualifying period of 12 months ownership and use of the vehicle) but now intend to become Australian residents on a permanent basis and remain in Australia indefinitely.
