Hello and Advice Needed

    Recommended Posts

    Hello from two future Adelaidians

OH and I applied for a 495 Visa in April and are now caught in the waiting hell, made especially worse by the backlog of Visa applications at the moment.

But hopefuly we should be getting the OK soon and just wanted some advice from those already settled.

My OH is a Logistics manager and I was wondering is anyone knew what the job situation is like at the moment, or any good agencies to approach. Also what is the likely salary level for this. He has specialised in food and drink (mainly wine) warehousing and distribution and has managed multi-site operations.

Also we plan to rent first and wondered where a good location to go for so as to get the best possible 'feel' for Adelaide.

And just generally and good hints and tips that people would have liked to have known before they made the move.

Any help and advice really appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the site :jiggy:

When we arrived we spent the first week driving round areas and looking at rentals to get a feel of what was right for us. We knew roughly where Greg would be setting up his business which was a bonus for us as we could work out comuutable areas straight away :v_SPIN: It is hard to say good or bad areas as we are all different and it depends what you are looking for.

Lots of wineries around in Mclaren Vale and Barossa so your OH should feel at home. There are some good agencies around and some job search sites - http://www.adelaidebound.com/employment.htm

Our major tip is bring a wifi laptop if you have one - definitely invaluable when you first arrive for looking for rentals, work etc and you get free access at the bigger libraries after joining

hello and welcome to the site

best, best, best tip we were given ....

bring your estate agent house particulars with internal and external shots to help you secure a rental

bring references from everyone, especially anyone with "local standing in the community" - police, civil servants etc, who can write a reference that they have visited your home and you keep in tidy, gardens up together etc

we all remember that we need work refs, but to secure a rental if you have not rented in years because you have been home owner, seems to get lost along the way. The best way to prove that you will be a good tenant is the above. We also provided a bank statement from the day of the rental viewing to prove we had sufficient funds to pay the rent - just going that extra mile to secure a rental.

Read websites and chat rooms - do your research about anything and everything ... and remember when you get here, life is much calmer and chilled out, good areas are blatantly obvious (IMO), work is easy to come by if you want to work (IMO).

Hope that helps you a bit.

    All the best for now

    Sas

We came on a 495 visa too... not the best but at least it got us here!! Best advice I could give is to think really carefully about what you do/dont bring out here. Some advice you may receive back home about customs etc is often the worse case senario..for example my OH gave away most of his DIY and gardening tools and is finding it pretty expensive to replace them all.

Also, a big big piece of advice is try not to convert everything back to pounds when you arrive - you will be earning dollars and that money you bring out soon disappears!!

Try not to get too stressed out!! Good luck!
