Child care wages?

    Recommended Posts

    Hi

I need some advice and the people who use this site seem to be in the know.

I'm in the UK but hope to be in Adelaide middle 08. I am doing my NVQ 2 in childrens care and learning which means I can work with children from birth to 16 but would like to work in a nursery/playgroup (not sure what its called in OZ). So can anyone tell me if my qualification will allow me to work in Adelaide and does anyone know what the pay is like?

    Cheers

Try googling "ABC learning centers" as for the pay I have been reliably informed it is around $15-19 per hour. I would think this depends on levels of qualifications. There are different requirements for most jobs here, I should think chikd care would be no different. I have a friend who is a qualified nursery nurse in the UK, she needs to gain a couple pieces of paper before she can work in that field here.

    hope that helps

I have also posted lots of threads about this on the forum somewhere. I gained my level 2 in Childrens care and development last year but didn;t want to do level 3 if it was not recognised in Australia. I work in school here but have been told by a friend in Oz that these jobs tend to be voluntary or hard to find so I'll also be looking at playschool work as well.

There are links to childcare settings from Lisas site - adelaidebound.

Hiya Tina, I have just read your post about childcare wages and qualifications. I have an NVQ 3 in Early Years and Education and wish to work in a nursery when we move to Adelaide. I think to get your qualifications recognised you have to send them off to get accessed and then they decide what level you will be classed as. They do recognise NVQ's but they I think they call them diplomas. I talked to somebody at Select Education and they pay people with any level of NVQ 25 dollars an hour. Which is more than the uk if you work in a nursery! If you want the address of the Skills accessment place then let me know, I have just sent mine off I think It takes a while.

I hope some of this is a help, I know I have had panics that I wont earn enough! but childcare workers are in demand over there so thats something.

    Good Luck

Oh Liz you are just what I needed I was starting to think nobody worked in childcare in Adelaide, because everyone I contact dont get back or cant answer me. I've e mailed the world and his dog about this. I want to stay working with the little ones and OMG $25 it min wages here, but the hours are good with your own kids at school.

Is the skills accessment place the TRA? Cos we have done that with my OH and have lodged our visa. But I know I will need to work in OZ.

When are you looking to get there? and what part of Adelaide?

Thabks once again you really are a star:)

Hiya Tina, I know how you feel I had the same trouble, we did visit Adelaide in the summer so i did try and get as much info as poss. I am going on my husbands visa as he is a nurse, so I am having to have my qualifications assessed by the skills place independently. When I spoke to select ed u also have to do a 1 day first aid course and also a child protection course and then once u have done those they can take u on i think u can book a place before you arrive. You also have to send off for a CRB which you can do before you arrive. If u go on the select website for Auz and email them they should send you the right forms.

We are hoping to go in Feb we are just waiting for our visa's. I think we are going to try and get accom near adelaide city centre or live off the tram line into the city. How bout U?

    Hi Tina,

Thats good that you can stay with friends, as far as I am aware I don't think the first aid and child protection courses count from the u.k if you wish to work for an agency like select education you also have to get your CRB done again in Australia but thats their policy I am not sure about other childcare places.

At the min we are just waiting for things to arrive in the post - the postman gets a shock in the morning when we pounce on him. Kris ( my husband) got a job at The Royal Adelaide hospital when we went over in the summer so from the end of August we started the process. When do you plan on going?
