We went there a few years ago now. A day trip to Green Island is well worth it. You can do diving, glass bottom boats etc. Lovely place.

A place called Yorkies Knob (yes for real) is nice. There is also an Aboriginal Cultural night. Meal etc. All locally run trips from Cairns Town Centre.

Cairns is spread out, you can either stay further out of town up the beaches, Palm beach trinity beach etc with palm fringe beaches and not many ameneties or stay in town with more amenities, restaurants. We stayed in town. Plenty to do in and around Cairns, Scuba diving snorkelling trips, white water rafting fishing , karunda , rain forest trips, drive around. We stayed on esplanade( muddy river inlet btw) but was about 20 minute walk back into town. wouldnt stop anymore than 10/15 minute walk next time.Iwouldnt stop any further out than the hospital. Stopped in apartment block with pool, spa and bbqs. spent a couple of nights barbying and in spa.We went in oct and 28/30 every day.

Can be busy holiday....but also pricey, well worth it tho

We love it up in Cairns and have been 3 times now and are planning to go back again in September. Our favourite place to stay is Mango Lagoon in Palm Cove - 4 1/2 star apartment accommodation (although I think it also has studio rooms), just a little walk from the beach, swimming pools, about half the price of the apartments on the Esplanade - we just love it! Palm Cove is about a 30 minute drive from Cairns (and is on the bus route for a day trip there) - it's a beautiful resort with good choice of restaurants (although fairly expensive so that's why we like staying in an apartment) and in a good location for day trips. If you book your trip and need some advice about things to do in the Cairns area please let me know.

    Best wishes, Linda
