Adelaide to Brisbane?

    Recommended Posts

    Hi

We have been in Adelaide for almost a year and feel really well settled, great friends and social life for us and the kids however my husband is finding his work underpaid and undervalued.

We never thought he would feel so strongly about his career and what that meant for our life's here.

He works in a specialised area of IT and although there is work here in Adelaide, for him as a contractor the rates are not what we expected and there is not enough work here without the fear of long periods of unemployment.

So we are seriously considering a move to Brisbane? mainly because there is work there, bigger more opportunities in his line of work and it's warmer (but wetter). We feel Melbourne is just too big! We are not big city people and crave the quieter side of life - hence why we chose Adelaide in the first place.

We have discussed this move over the last few months and it is not something that we would enter into lightly with two small kiddies. I want to study more and without a serious income we just could not afford to live here and do all the things we want to, including buy a house without compromising greatly.

Nothing is set in stone yet but just wondered if any one can offer any advice or good interstate removal companies??? Information is power and once we have all the facts we can make a more sound decision....

    Hi,

It's a difficult decision but I can understand your husband's situation. I used to work in IT and luckily landed one contract which lasted me the whole time when we lived in Adelaide in the 90's, but I really feared what my prospects would be in Adelaide once that contract finished (we went back to the UK !). Adelaide has never been good for IT, Sydney, Melbourne and to a lesser extent Brisbane, Perth and Canberra are all much better.

Your children are still young and if they haven't started school yet then it would be better to move sooner rather than later. Have you been to Brisbane before? Maybe do a reccie up there and see if you like it. Apparantly Queensland property prices are falling more than any other state at the moment so you may get a bargain.

    Good luck.

    Hi Michelle.

It's a tough call but you and Phil are very sensible so I know you'll make the best choice.

It's a shame about the work situation.

Have you had a look up around that way - sort of a small reccie trip??

Why not have a look this site's big sister..... Pons in Oz?? Lots of info there

Michelle, Brisbane is a lovely city and though there is more of a metropolitan feel to its CBD, there is still a strong family vibe. There is a wonderful man made beach in the city centre and you are never more than an hours drive away from some of the most stunning places on earth!!!

Our very first plan was to move to Scarborough, an eastern suburb of Brisbane, but Carys suffers with her chest terribly in humid conditions, so it kind of ruled it out for us.

It would be a great shame to see you guys move away from Adelaide, but you have to do what is right for your long term Aussie futures and your family. I wish you all the very best in your decisions!

You've made the move this far, nothing stopping you from "moving house" again.

I've never been, and am afraid to go in case i had to go

Thanks, The website has been very helpful but alas there is not the money for a reccie not even sure we could afford the move there is just no money left at the moment!

I am being open minded at this stage but I can't see how long term our situation would improve so it's looking more likely. Phil is going to do some more research this week and speak to those in the know about his work opportunities and hopefully go from there...

    watch this space..

and Anne your right it is easier to move now whilst the kids are still little which is why all of a sudden there seem to be a rush to decide.

I will be sorry to leave but the type of work Phil needs is just not here it seems...
