Mobile Phone Contracts

    Recommended Posts

Just a bit of information on mobile phone contracts for when we get out there in the New Year

In the Uk at the moment they are doing Sim only contracts and for around £10 per month it gives you 200 mins and unlimited text, which is great for the kids.

For that you get a Sim card that can go in any phone, are there any such contracts out in SA or anything like that ?

    Cheers Rob

First makes sure you get any mobiles unlocked before you leave the UK. If you do it before you cancel your contract and say your emigrating they do it free and don't try to offer you a new contract. You can just go into Coles or woolies or a newsagent and pick up a pay as you go sim as soon as you get here and do it that way. Look on vodaphone and opts web sites for current contract deals. If it says $59 cap that means it's a $59 a month plan. There's no such thing as unlimited on mobiles here ( although in the UK they're only unlimited to within acceptable use anyway). Check the kids bills to see what they actually use as that will help work out what they need.

For making calls back to UK, I have got a Lebara sim card, they are free and calls are very cheap! - For my day to day mobile I have a $29 smart cap with virgin which gives free calls and texts virgin to virgin - free texts to anyone and 1gb internet stuff - all in all quite a good one

    Hi Rob,

They have very similar phone options out here, you can get a sim only contact for about $20 a month which gives you heaps of minutes and either 100mb data or 100 text messages. Or you can simply buy a SIM for $2 and recharge it every 30 days with the amount you need. You can pick up the SIM cards from supermarkets or phone shops. We went to the local monile phone shop when we first arrived and bought a prepaid (or pay as you go!) which included the SIM, a phone and the first months recharge for $49.

The main thing to remember is that the phone you are putting the SIM into needs to be unlocked.

The hardest thing to get your head round here is mobile phone call charges typically a $30 recharge with give you about $200 worth of calls, whilst its sounds good its not really as the cost per call is high.

Why they don't just lower the cost of the calls and make a $30 recharge=$30 worth of calls!!

Also to get a prepaid SIM or prepaid phone package you will need ID, a passport or driving licence is fine. However if you want to get any type of phone contract you will need to pass the 100 points of ID system, which is tricky if you have just arrived.

    Cheers Gary
