Glad we made the decision to move on

    Recommended Posts

I thought that I would just let everyone know that we are happy that we made the move from Adelaide to Brisbane. We started off in Adelaide due to a job offer, however I was extremely unhappy in the hospital for many reasons that I do not want to go into, however I was advised by imigration to report the hospital which I am in the process of doing, warning other British Qualifed nurses of this place.

Now adelaide is a beautiful city and I am not writing this post to cause upset or cause an argument but to just give our family views. I have three children of different ages and all three were finding it very difficult to settle (maybe because they were feeling how unhappy I was). My eldest is a qualified hairdresser she was findin very difficult to get a full time job and was finding it difficulat to find friends of her own age. Now she is not a party animal but did like to socialise, however she did meet a few good friends and also some unsavory friends. Since arriving in Brisbane she has gained a perment job with a very good wage and already built up a small net work of friends.

My son is a rugby enthusiast and this was very limited in adelaide, he also was distraught that in SA he would not be going to high school for another year. He is now starting with a rugby club in January and is also starting high school in Jan, he is settled and much happier. My youngest has breazed into school, has friends coming over to play and is finally registered in an elite gymnastic club so she is back training 3 times a week and happy.

We lived in a small townhouse in adelaide with a courtyard, here in brisbane we have a large 3 bed home with two bathrooms two living areas kitchen diner, front and back garden and a pool, all this and we are paying less than we were in adelaide.

We are only half an hour away from the beach.

Now the hospital I work in is a big state hospiatl a far cry fromn the private one I was in, oreintation a week, ward training a week and supernumary a week. My salary has also gone up $15,000 as I was being underpaid in adelaide.

I am glad we experienced adelaide as it is making us appreciate what we have now.

PIA gave me some valuable advice and it is a good forum to gain information that is needed and I thankyou everyone who has been able to help, however there are the odd people who like to use the website to be someone they are not and this is quite sad.

As I said this is our family opinion and the reasons why adelaide was not for us. Now before people start ranting and raving, we were happy in the U.K had good paid jobs a nice home and a good network of friends, and we were not running away. We just wanted something different. I also lived in australia as a kid in NSW.

We wanted to go to Brisbane from day one but I was offered the job, but you know what they say if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

I thank everyone for their advice over the last few months and wish every good luck with the future.

Excellent post, thanks for comming back and sharing that with us. I am really glad you did this, so many go straight back to blighty and it's great to see you have all settled really quickly.

Just goes to show there is so much more to Australia.

Thanks for a great post and glad to hear that you are all alot happier and have settled into your new lives, at the end of the day the most important thing is family and you made the decision as a family and you are happier for it. Thankyou for giving an unbiased comparisn of Adelaide to Brisbane. Not everyone will settle in the first place they move to and many forget that there are many different areas in Australia and all are completely different so if you don't settle in one try another, we were lucky, we love it here, settled quickly and the kids are happy but they are only young so gues they may have settled anywhere we went. I admire you for what you have done and once again thankyou for keeping us up to date.

Good luck with the next chapter in your lives

Yes,it is difficult sometimes for young people to come over and settle. Our 18 yr old son still hates it here, even after 26 months, and refuses to accept anything about Adelaide! My 20 yr old son likes it here now(at last)!Hopefully the younger one will appreciate his options in the future, but it's no fun at all now.Good luck to you all for moving on,i really hope it works out for you in Brissy. It's not just Adelaide, there are loads of young people all over OZ who have come over here and would rather be back home in the UK,just as there are loads who love it here, and would never go back.Everyone has different circumstances in their families and what's good for the Goose isn't necessarily good for the Gander.

Thanks for this update. Really good to hear you have settled so well in Brisbane and that the family is now finally finding their feet. I guess what you have gone through can be of some consolation to many others who are having trouble settling in Adelaide (or any other of Oz) that not all of Oz is the same and sometimes trying a different city is the way to go. Hope things go from strength to strength with your jobs, sports etc.

its lovely to hear that you are now happier as a family.Adelaide isnt for everybody.

We too are finding it hard 4 years on!!

It takes an awful lot of courage to make the decision to move the second time,as I am finding out for myself.:notworthy:

In some ways it is easier to move back to blighty as at least you know what you are getting and have some support. So the dilemma goes on

    Best wishes to you all

Thank you for your very informed post and I am pleased that it has all worked out for you. I hope that we continue to settle here in Adelaide as I fear we will make the move up there in the future mainly for my husbands work. For the time being we are here to stay and love it but it is good to know that Brisbane has turned out well for you.

Good post guys. Can I ask where you live in Brissie and what are the advantages of living there?

We live about 15km from the city. Adantages for us is there are rugby clubs which we could not find in adelaide, elite gymnast club. A younger population in general. Things are cheaper, cars, insurance car and house. Property is cheaper. The Hospital I work at now is a lot better than where I was. The general feel of Brisbane is we find it not as dated as Adelaide. We also feel that people seem more genuine here, but as i have said these are our views only.

I didn't realise this. I thought property prices were higher in Brisbane than in Adelaide!

I guess it depends which areas of each city you're talking about...

A friend of mine has recently moved to Queensland and has been shocked at how many empty apartments there are in the block where they are renting - apparently a lot of expats bought up properties thinking they would have no problem renting them out as an investment option, and now that lots of the tradie work has dried up in the area, they are having real troubles filling them, so the rental vacancy rate is probably a lot higher than here in Adelaide, which I guess in turn brings down the overall property prices.
