Two Years In

    Recommended Posts

    Hi everyone

We've just reached our two yrs living in Adelaide and we love it, although it hasn't been an easy ride.

We arrived in Feb 2009 to a sunny Port Pirie and quickly realised we were in the middle of no-where!! My hubby's sponsored job was not what at all he expected, working in crap conditions and the company were making local lads redundant so the workplace atmosphere wasn't to good.

After five months we contacted government and explained our position and they agreed we could relocate within SA, as long as hubby is in full time emplyment.

We moved to Northern subs of adelaide and settled right in, with fab neighbours and kids settled into schools, meanwhile while we're enjoying our life here, we get some awful news that my sister inlaw in suffering terrible depression and tries to take her own life, which results in her ending up in intensive care on more than one occasion, this obviously shocks all of us, and my hubby is besides himself, considers moving us all back to UK as he feels like crap being the other side of the world and helpless.

Plus i get news that my mum has had a stroke, I know this is the news all of us dread to hear. So we make the decision to go back for a holiday and see whats happening.

On returning to Uk, I see my Mum is fine and recovering well and was nice to spend time with family.

My sister inlaw is still battling her depression and is getting specialised help, I think this is gonna be on going and I know my husband keeps thinking we've made her situation worse by emigrating, but I don't think we can be responsible for other peoples actions.

While we were visiting family it definately confirmed for me where I wanna be, and thats here in Adelaide, the way I see it, it doesn't matter where you live as long as your happy and enjoying life, and for us at this moment in time it's here!!

We still have our house in Wales and as of this week, we've put it on the market for sale and hoping to buy our own lovely home here soon.

Thank you for sharing your story and your very positive attitude to your lives here.

I lost my Dad to Cancer last year that was and still is hard for me and like you my SIL also suffers severe depression and anxiety and we wish we too were there to help but there is nothing that you can do. Like you said you are not responsible for other peoples actions!

I am so happy that we call Adelaide home, here's to many more years and to one day stop counting them :o

Wow! What fighting spirit you must have to have dealt with all of that in such a short space of time. Yours is the type of attitude and commitment that Australia needs and should value so much. Well done to you all for sticking it out and coming through things so positively, and here's hoping you have some smooth sailing ahead - you certainly deserve it.

Hiya glad to hear you are enjoying your new life! i know there has been mention of it before but there is a company called Kinsure that for 175 GBP (sorry dont have the symbol!) will get you back to the uk when a loved one is seriously ill or passes away - cant be on pre-exsisting illness, but it offers peace of mind that if you need to get back to the uk you wont have to worry about the airfare, (there are restrictions on age & it covers the whole family for return flights,

thanks for the info, had no idea about this, definately handy to know for an emergency, hope i never need to use them tho!

I think when living in Oz you should really get yourself in the mind frame that you just can't fly back for every family emergency, as much as you feel you ought to be there, it's financially impossible and if you can't live with that then perhaps migrating isn't the best idea.
