Alot depends on what make of bike your after if its just abike to ride upn down the esplenade then theyre quite reasonable....if your after a proper off roader with disc brakes grip shift etc etc then you pay more....

you are not going to get a good hybrid from Kmart etc, so will be looking at a bike shop, Giant start at $429. Any other brands you want to know, give me a shout. If you have good ones already - I would bring them. There are lots of opportunities to ride safely here, there is a great bike path network

Maps downloadable here, also availabe in hard copy from bike shops/tourist info, which are better I reckon.

    Bikes !!!!!!

Arnt they the pain in the butt things that wont stick to the cycle lanes, jump red lights, pull out in-front of other vehicals and then complain when they get hit.

Gotta say though im glad that helmets and lights are compulsery and cyclist can get done for not having them.

    HI,

I do a lot of bike riding out here and it is a great place to do it, with loads of bike paths and lanes, away from the crap driving skills found on the roads here.

High end bikes do cost more here, but middle of the road to lower end stuff is only slightly more expensive. What is mega expensive are parts and accessories- every cyclist in the know here gets parts etc sent over from the UK from places like Chain Reaction Cycles. I ordered some stuff from there on a Thursday evening a couple of weeks back, and it was delivered the following monday! I know guys that have built entire bikes from parts they have ordered from CRC and they have worked out cheaper than buying from here.

I have bought 3 bikes since Ive been here- the first one was a discontinued brand MTB that I got for half the original price ($5000) - I checked around and it seemed to be the cheapest in the world! Not usually the case...

I also bought two hybrids to replace the cheap ones we brought over with us as we found that although we had a garage full of expensive mountain bikes, we did most of our riding on the hybrids- as the weather is good (most of the time) you tend to want to ride more places.

We bought two new Giant Cypress 2 bikes from Glenelg cycles- they are $500 dollars each, but we got 10% off. They have been brilliant so far, with good components, very comfy for longer rides, and seem to take the abuse (I) give them. Id recommend them highly- my wife loves hers. They do come in a womens frame but she gets on fine with the mens frame in a smaller size. You could compare that to UK prices but make sure you quote for the Cypress 2 as the number reflects different specs of bike. ( 1 being the highest for this model )

If you are going to ship your bikes over, compare the cost of shipping and what you would get for yours second hand to buying new ones. Bikes don't seem be to top of everyones list when they first arrive but you will use them a lot. A lot of the Adelaide metro district is flat until you head south or to the hills which makes for easy commuting.

If you do ship them, go to your local bike shop and ask for some bike boxes- most shops struggle to get rid of them. They are the boxes that the bikes get imported in so they are very strong. Then take out the wheels etc, and pack them up- they will take up less room. The bike boxes are also good for flat screen TV's, large pictures etc. I shipped 8 bike boxes when we came over!! Be sure to get boxes that are for bikes similar in size to yours.

Bear in mind though that if you do ship bikes, they will have to be SPOTLESS. Including tyre treads etc, to pass the strict quarantine requirements. Customs did inspect some of my boxes. A good tip is to clean the wheels etc with jeyes fluid- if they get a whiff of that when they open the box it tells them its been disinfected.

If you need any more advice, send me a message.

    Cheers, Jim
