Primary School teaching ???

    Recommended Posts

    Hi all,

I was a primary school teacher in the Uk, and I think I would like to do the same over here. In the past, I read a lot on here about what was needed. I just wondered what the current situation is and what I must do to get my qualifications recognised over here. My degree was only a 3 year course, and I seem to remember reading that this was not enough for Aussie standards. Is there somewhere, probably in the city, that I can contact to discuss the whole process I need to go through in order to be able to teach here.

    Thank you.

    Paul

    Hiya,

You'll need to do the conversion course to 'top up' your degree - I think Flinders uni do a course (I haven't researched this myself, but have heard it was 1 year, although has now moved to a 2 year course). If you contact the Education Dept of Flinders (if they have such a dept in aussie unis :) )they should be able to point you in the right direction, I've found the TRB (teacher's registration board) to not be the most helpful with such things, although they might be able to help as well http://www.trb.sa.edu.au/default.php

Hope that helps in general a bit :) Good luck

    Hi Paul

My degree was a 3 year BA Primary Education degree completed in the UK. You need to have done 4 years of higher education to teach in Oz. I have just started a bachelor of Special Education at flinders, only started in July. The course is 1 year, specialising in special ed obviously, recommended by someone at flinders, you can contact them through the website. There is no practical experience on the course and it can be completed external or internal or a combination or part time. Having not taught much and not for a while it is ideal for me. Have a look on Flinders website, they were prompt at contacting me (though it is there mid-semester break this week) and I got on the course no problems at all. You will problably want to contact the teachers registration board but all they told me was I needed to do 1 extra year of uni.

Thank you both very much for replying. I had hoped for months rather than years. I will check Flinders Uni out and see what they say. Thanks again for the starting point. Much appreciated.
