Getting no where fast!!

Hello all

We are looking to move to SA in about 2-3 years time, I am currently doing my nurse training in Mental Health and I am in my second year of training.

I am looking to come out to Adelaide in Feb/March 2013 for 2-3 weeks on placement, however I am really struggling to find possible contacts (ie hospitals, care homes etc) who may be willing to take me under their wings for the duration of my stay. If anyone knows someone or somewhere who may do this I would be so grateful.

Thanks

Joo:smile:

Hi,

I don't know exactly who you should be asking, I would only suggest you google care homes ,hospitals etc, then either ring (this could be costly)write or email them all that you find, there could be loads on there. However its a staring point.

Just make a list, and apply to as many as you can and keep a record of your responses if any,the ones that do respond keep a list of their details and keep in touch with them from time to time.

Maybe where you are doing your course can help, they may know someone who as done this before?

A lot of places may not respond however you have to take a step back and ask yourself would you take on someone from another country etc....

I tried this route during my visa saga to get a job sponsorship, while waiting to get our visa. I did all of the above and out of all the ones I applied to I made a few good contacts who I kept in touch with even though I ended up working elsewhere for work.

You can only but try, you never know

Thanks for you response, I have googled many places which I think specialise in Mental Health, and I have emailed some too, but no response as yet! I have also approached uni too but not had much support there either, oh well I will keep plodding on at it:eek:

Will they even be able to take you on a placement in nursing like that? I recall a thread either on here or PIO about something similar and the end conclusion was something along the lines of its not really possible as its a medical position and therefore not the sort of thing you can gain placements in overseas.

Although I do know of someone who got a 2 week placement in NZ, but that was winning a competition of all things, not applying direct. And wasn't a nursing post, more of an observer. She wasn't allowed to actually get 'hands on'. It was to help promote NZ and all that for those thinking to emigrate.

I found it difficult to secure a placement from the UK in SA in 2007, so I tried Perth and got one within a week!! I just looked on their federal health website and emailed the lead nurse. All they wanted was a confirmation letter from uni that I was studying there and due a placement, proof of my NMC docs and and formal photo work/uni ID. They then asked me where I would be staying and matched me with a local clinic! They even invited me to a government study day at the state health buildings and I was invited to speak as an international student delegate (very very scary)! I spent 3 weeks in Swan View, Perth in April 2008 in the community working with aboriginal link nurses and it was fab.

Snifter is right though, as I wasn't registered with the Australian nursing board, I was allowed only to participate in an observatory capacity, but this didn't stop me learning heaps and even helped me get a first in my dissertation as I did it on aboriginal public health.

I even got a job offer there!!! :-) Keep looking, i'm sure you'll get something lined up.

Thanks for all your responses!!

Snifter-I have been informed by uni that students in the past have gone to Oz on placement, but uni like students to arrange their own so they dont have any details of where they have been before!!

Julia, I have considered Perth as a last resort but I would much prefer Adelaide as it it where we are interested in moving too.

Pete thanks for the contacts, I will give it a go!

I wont give up too easily on this:biggrin:

Ah, all clear now :) Good to know. Shame they don't have a way of sharing the info though. Seems daft to not be able to have a list of places students have been able to apply to.

Good luck with it all anyways :) Let us know how you get on. Would be helpful for others interested in doing similar.
