Dependants Visa

We are the discussion stages and ready to make a move on the application, we are either coming on a sponsored visa or skilled visa (i think) but unsure about my 17 year old son who is 18 next month. Should i rush the visa in before he is 18 or does it not matter about his age as long as i can prove he is a dependant? Any advice on the visa application process would also be helpful as i dont know where to start, costs, lenght of waiting time or whether to use an agency. HELP:wacko:

Hi Andi,

Welcome to PIA,

Take the time to check out http://www.immi.gov.au/ It willhave all the info you need as regarding visas and visa applications. Ideally you would want to go out on an perminant independant visa (175) as this will give you freedom with work and you can claim benefits etc. A sponsored one may find you tied to one employer whether you like workingthere or not.

Take a look. If you have any further questions don't be shy.

Pete

We are exactly in the same position. At the time we applied which is six months ago your child needed to be under 18

to be under 18 hence we applied when he was seventeen. We are now just waiting on a decision from our medicals.

Hi Lynn, can i ask you, what is your son planning on doing once in Australia. Mine is 17, 18 in January and we are unsure whether he is going to be going back to school or not. he is in College at the moment and we are REALLY hoping to have visa so we can go over there in August when school finishes as i have two other children. I'm after options for him, as i don't want him to change his mind and say hes not coming, that would be disasterous!!

Hi Andi

We are in a similar position. Sam is 18 in September. At present he is in 6 th form and we have been told that he has to stay in full time education / dependant etc. I did ask our agent the other day and he said that if it goes past the time of Sam being 18 all we have to do is supply written proof that he is in full time education and that he is living with us.

If Sam does not come with us at this point he said he was either going to be a plumber or go in the army so would hope to get over that way. Changes his mind each week though depending on what he thinks pays the best. We try to impart wisdom that have to start from the bottom but still dillusional at this stage.

We used an agent and they have been fab with helping us with the references etc. If you want details, give me a shout.

Hope this helps.

Niki
