Customs duty/ tax

Hi

 

I am trying to gather some info on customs duty. If someone is coming to oz on a PR visa, and they have more than $1000 worth of goods (i.e. Laptop, camera etc), they have to pay some customs tax?

If some one is immigrating and they are their possessions then no unless you buy say 5 brand new laptops in boxes that customs will think you're going to try to sell. I bought 3 computers each worth more than that with me and it was fine.
