    Hi Genie1

The CPV 173 is the temporary visa but it is NOT cheaper than a CPV 143. The CPV 173 merely enables you to defer the payments ober 2 steps instead of paying the whole lot at once. Also, the holder of a CPV 173 is NOT entitled to any other visa apart from a CPV 143, which must be applied for within 2 years of the date of the grant of the 173.

Apart from that, the processing of a CPV 173 isn't significantly quicker than for a CPV 143. It is taking about 15-18 months at the moment, I've heard.

The tracker website in the link above is unofficial but it is run by a Briton (user name Sandch on the forums.) He and his wife obtained CPV 143s about 3 years ago and they now live in Melbourne. Present applicants for CPVs are able to add their data to the tracker and they can update it by themselves.

6,500 CPVs (600 173s and 5,900 143s) are granted every year, so the tracker only shows a tiny percentage of the current applicants at any time. Nonetheless, Sandch started it about 5 years ago. I and others have been watching it ever since. Although it only contains details of a tiny number of applicants, experience has shown that it is pretty reliable about what is happening in the CPV graoup generally.

    Cheers
