Skilled migrants having trouble getting jobs?

Bit of a longshot I know but I heard Leon Byner on 5AA was doing something about mining jobs. I keep having to get out of the car before I hear the full report, but it might be worth a call to the station to get some details

I can only speak for myself, of course, but the hardest part I found in the struggle to secure a decent job was figuring out how to transfer my skill-set to the job market in Adelaide. Used to be in a highly specialised job in a field that I knew would be a bit thin here. However, I did some homework and found that my area of work could be found in Adl but not in the specific role I had worked in for years.

 

I did not use recruiters. I used direct job links that eliminated recruiters/headhunters. I scanned only those firms that had their own HR departments and the first time I applied to a position that I thought would be beneficial to both the employer and myself, I got the job. It doesn't have the same cachet, it doesn't pay the same but it suits me fine. It's a good start.

 

During my first two years in Adelaide I upgraded my education to reflect Aussie credentials and I worked as a volunteer which enabled me to provide a solid work reference.

 

There are good jobs in Adelaide. Of course, it's a much smaller pond to fish in. It was daunting at first and you might think you will slide backward professionally. Over time I have deduced that large employers tend to discriminate less against new migrants, provided the applicant has experience, language skills, relevant education and legal and full working rights in Oz. Get your foot in the door!

 

As I've said before, it's a job finding a job yet once you secure work you will feel you made the right decision moving to Australia -- and that you belong here.

Hi again,

 

a short up-date. My hubbie got a new job yesterday:smile: after 10 days intense search he was successful because he matches to the job requirements. He got a feedback which may help me and others. You have to be the "perfect" candidate, you have match most of the requirements.

I'm so happy now! Unfortunately, I'm a very impatient person. I have to learn to be more patient here in South Australia, then I might get a job, too.

Congratulations! We're not there yet, but from people's posts it does seem like a totally different marketplace for jobs.

 

I think for us, we're happy to do anything initially just to get some income coming in. My partner is a teacher, and so we know we're in for a little while of doing TRT etc but that's just the Adelaide way, so I'm going to try not to moan about it too much when things aren't going our way!! Easier said than done though right?
