Whats its like living in Hallett Cove?

I have lived in Hallett cove for the past 12 years and have never seen a snake, I go walking down the coastal path quite a lot and have never seen any there. Thats not saying that they ain't any about. You can walk to the shops just depends where about in H/C you are Its a big area and quite spread out its one of the biggest suburbs in Adelaide.

Arrghh... I can't make up my mind... Over this weekend we have viewed two properties that we have really taken to; one in Hallet Cove the other in Glenelg. The Glenelg house has more going for it in terms of it's location; it's $80 cheaper a month, Jetty Road is a 1 mile walk; the beach is a two mile walk away... We will only have one car to begin with so this is quite important in terms of my sanity; however the Hallet Cove house is fabulous, it has sea views & it's two storey, which is handy when you have a baby; so you're not having to tip toe around all on the same level.

Does anyone know; can you walk to the Hallet Cove shopping centre from the HC residential area? There is a bus stop right outside the house that we looked at, but I like the idea of being able to walk to places as well; if not does anyone know how reliable the buses are & how frequently they pass through HC. Also outside the cafe there is a sign that says Beware of the Snakes, now I understand there is a Conservation area but I think I would pass out if I saw a snake; can anyone who lives there tell me how likely bumping into Sid the Snake is whilst enjoying a lesuirely stroll along the beach?

Just a small point - the reason traditional houses in South Australia have been single storey is that in the summer, hot air rises - get a 40 degree day or two (which is not unusual) and you'd really rather not have to go upstairs to sleep! I remember someone telling me their kids didn't even like to sleep in their top bunk on hot summer nights - it really is noticeably hotter the higher you go. We are in a single storey house and have never had to have the air con on at night. Our electricity bills are consequently much lower than for someone in a two storey place. With the increase in land prices, obviously it's become more common to build 'up', but power prices are rising all the time, and to me, a single storey makes much more sense - practically and economically.

It really depends where abouts in Hallett you live as to whether you can walk to shops, station etc. It is a very large suburb, large and hilly! There is a decent bus service though.

I think it's such a shame that when someone asks for an opinion on a certain area, you then sadly get a few people just jumping on and having a bitch.

If you have negative things to say why not try to be constructive as well? We all want and need different things from the places we live in, and all places have good and bad points. We live in Seaford Rise and although its not everyones cup of tea, personally for us we love it, its close to fantastic beaches, vineyards and not far to the city if we want it, but I can also see how people would see the benefits of living closer to the city. As for their being a lot of Brits here, yes there are but there are also a lot of Australians, don't really see why it is a problem for some there being a lot of Brits here, after all that's what we all are on this forum.

We have been here for just 8 weeks and have a 12 month rental in Glenelg. It is a perfect location next to the beach and always something going on within walking distance. We may not end up living here long-term (a costly suburb to buy in!) but for our first year of settling in and getting out and about everyday (on foot or tram into the CBD) and meeting people, it is perfect for us. My OH has been at work with the car each day and yet I don't feel stranded in the house (Hallett Cove people may say the same but when we visited, there wasn't that much going on) and I can easily walk to the supermarkets, shops, cafes, sandy beach, library, schools etc.

Good luck....it's always a difficult decision to make and I'm not looking forward to making the decision again when our lease is up early next year!!

I enjoy socialising with anyone.....regardless of where they live or where they're from. I don't like the cove because is middle of nowhere, taxis anywhere expensive, rubbish beach, far too hilly, and over priced.

The OP ask for opinions on Hallet Cove....not everyone is going to like someones opinion.....and obviously we ALL know theres no Hallet Cove bashing allowed on this site anyway!!

Glenelg v Hallet Cove??

As per my previous post in this thread. One of the main reasons I moved from Hallett Cove was the transport issue and most of my family and friends living closer to the city. (The area itself is lovely with great views etc.) That may have changed since I was there but I also am a bit of walker to the shops etc and I found it was too hilly to walk for me. (not that fit!). I think location is important if you don't have a car at your disposal during the day, otherwise you can feel isolated. Also it also depends where you OH works. Anything you can do to shave time off your travel to and from work is more time spent with family and doing enjoyable things together. Glenelg is an area you can just pop out to and have a coffee along Jetty Road if you feel like a bit of a break from home - even in the cold weather they have cafes where there are protective coverings from the wind and rain.

same for us, we got rid of our 2nd car as we live a 5 minute walk from everything, except the beach!! location is everything, sometimes things have to be sacrificed..

Thank you for all your help & advice; some very insightful & valid points which I hadn't even thought about; we accepted the house (single storey) in Glenelg this afternoon :)

Good decision!! You can always head up to Little Britain to go shopping if you fancy a day trip out of Adelaide!! :biglaugh:

My hubby, I and our two boys have been in HC for over 2 years and we love it! Our boys go to Hallett Cove School and have made some great friends in the year they have been there. We have sea views and are right by the beach so often go for evening walks along the conversation area, up sugarloaf and then along the beach - is incredible and always have to pinch myself that we live here. There is a real community spirit and everyone says hi to you. They do call it little Britain as 30% of the residents are British and the same in the school they are all expats with British kids so nice that the kids all have something in common, I think that is why they tend to hang out with each other more. I work in the city and train journey from Hallett Cove Beach is 35mins, with sea views most of the way. If your husband is in Noarlunga he will have a 10minute drive to work, which is nothing in the scheme of things here. Is very quiet, and family friendly, lots of parks, skate parks and we even have our own little shopping centre which is relatively new but has anything you could need. Honestly couldn't recommend it more!!

Im really excited about coming over in July. Will be heading to Hallett Cove to check out rentals. Is it easy to secure a rental in HC? Our friends recently emigrated to Brisbane and said it was a nightmare securing a property because there were so many people looking for rentals at the same time!!! Thanks Michelle

I think 9 out of 10 people would pick to live near Glenelg rather than HC ( even tho I personally dont like the beach , far better ones further south) Theres few centres of life around Adelaide and a lot of people want to live there. The only problem with renting in theses areas is , Can you afford to buy there???, if that time comes ,and if you cant all the hassles that brings especially for kids ( older ones). Hc is an affordable suburb in comparison and is only 15 mins down the road
