Lobethal...until 31st!

The lights in Loby are good,I used to live there for years.sorry to mention anything negative on this thread, but I still keep in regular contact with my mates who live there. We get coach load after coach load of visitors, and people obviously driving around the town in their own cars, and for the most part, the majority of people do just come to look at the lights with their families and enjoy a nice night out.Unfortunately there is the minority who for whatever reason think its acceptable behaviour to trash people's gardens.Plants and shrubs have been damaged beyond help, garden ornaments stolen, people drunk vomiting in peoples gardens, and yes even people using gardens for toilets. They also have to endure parents with out of control kids running all over their gardens, people who bring their dogs with them, and not picking up after them, damage to their cars, the list goes on.Even when I lived there, the community were considering stopping this annual event because of the things I've mentioned. Some of my mates boycott the lights now(Don't bother putting any up)which is a shame. So if you do go,please respect the locals and their gardens and the town itself.

Yes we noticed that there were fewer lights the last few years. I saw people walking all over people's gardens and couldn't believe it, just thought it was rude!!! Really sorry to read your post about the locals' experiences. :( Had a great time and the nativity was good. They ought to put signs up around the place, haven't seen anything or heard any announcements asking people to respect others' homes. Which there should be.

That's so sad to hear, Moonraker. It would be such a shame, although totally understandable, if the anti-social and down right rude actions of a few jeopardise something that's been enjoyed by South Australians for some 50/60 (?) years.

They ought to put signs up around the place, haven't seen anything or heard any announcements asking people to respect others' homes. Which there should be.

I can't say I agree that there should be signs or announcements asking people to behave decently; surely we should be able to take it for granted that people know how to act?

Plus, it seems to me that the people who would observe signs are not the kind of people that would cause the problems, do you know what I mean?

Did Westminster have a light display this year? Theirs used to be very good :xmas2:

Yes Sallyh, the nativity is really great is'nt it?My kids were in it a couple of times as angels!:cute:There was a vid on You Tube about the vandalism ect in Loby when the lights are on!One of my mates is on it talking!lol As I said most people do behave and act in a civilised way,its just the minority of people that spoil it for everyone else.I would prefer to see more police patrols myself. Its also appalling how much rubbish is dumped by motorists driving in/away from the town!Pretty disgusting IMHO!Apart from those aspects it is worth going, and Loby needs the business.

Well signs is better than no signs. If there's something saying that residents love the visitors but would ask them to stay off their lawns and not to touch the lights... I think that there would be fewer people doing it... not everone walking around the lights was trashing the place. If fewer people do it then the ones who do will stand out. PLus if there's a request not to, then combined with Moonraker's request for more police around- that should make a difference. I would never walk on someone's garden, but half the places round here don't even have sidewalks, so you have to walk on someone's garden if you are on foot. Where does the garden stop and the public right of way start?

Yes sallyh, lack of sidewalks is part of the problem, but from what my mates say(and from my own experience of living there)mainly kids will run around near people's front doors so obviously not staying near the road! There used to be a cop station open in Loby when I lived there, but unfortunately it closed a few years ago and I think the closest one now is in Woodside(close by).
