We are currently looking at the different regions of South Australia and Mount Gambier seems to look very attractive - low rent/ buy costs, nice area etc - has anyone been there or lived there?

If so what is it like - pros and cons?

My wife and I are both teachers - Mount Gambier does have a number of schools which also look very attractive.

Comments and suggestions much appreciated

John

Hi John, when we first started this process i looked on google earth at all the towns in SA and we were very tempted by Mt. Gambier. It looks real nice and all the facilities ,also it's traveling distance for hol's to both Adelaide and Melbourne, but i read somwhere that they are building a nuke reactor plant there so that put an end to that idea. don't fancy grandkids with 3 eyes and walk backwards!!! still going to take a look though. Stu.

Mt gambier is the hub for the Southeast. The state high school has had good press in the last few years. If you can find work there then it's worth a look. It's about 5 hours drive away from Adelaide, it is possible to fly aswell. Housing in the regional centres is still much more affordable than in the cities. There will probably be a choice of schools. There is plenty to do down there in the southeast, there are caves with stalagtites etc in Naracoorte, the beaches at Robe, the Blue lake nr the mount. As far as I know there is no nuclear reactor planned for south australia.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like a really nice place and somewhere worth trying out, especially if cost of renting/ buying a house is cheaper than in adelaide. From various websites I have looked at with photos, it looks really beautiful there. From what I can gather, there are about 8 primary schools and 4 secondary schools there so even if it were a case of doing relief teaching to start with, hopefully there would be some permanent work there for us eventually. Good that there is an airport there with flights to both Adelaide and Melbourne.

PS - Think we will head there regardless of whether there is a nuclear reactor or not!
