Graphic designers and Web designers wanted

Hi. After being in Adelaide for 7 months and working in a junior job in Graphic Design - I decided to quit yesterday and go self employed to try things on my own. I believe there is a lot of work out there - but only if you are willing to go it alone and take a chance. Design jobs are pretty hard to get here and I am not prepared to do a junior job when I have 11 years experience and a design degree! Anyway - I just wondered if there are any other designers/web designers that have moved to Adelaide and are finding it difficult. I thought it may be good to meet up and discuss this. I have ideas about sharing skills, resources and maybe eventually sharing an office space - being a kind of design commune! This is just a really basic idea at the moment but would love to hear from anyone who would be willing to take a chance and see if together we can come up with a plan! Life is too short to be in a miserable job - and none of us came to start our lives again in Adelaide to be miserable!

Feel free to send me a private message or answer this thread if you like this idea.

Hiya, I'm not a graphic designer but a friend of mine on this site, Skellysgirl, is a graphic designer and I know she was concerned about the lack of job opportunities there are at the moment. She hopes to be out there next summer, I'm sure she might be interested in your plan!

Hi 'ya peeps,

We're newbies to PIA and this is our first (of many) posts.

After months of persuading OH that Oz would be a great place to settle, we're finally about to start the ball rolling with the first phase of the visa application - having discussed our options with migration agents it seems that 'Skilled Regional Sponsored' is the way to go.

OH is a very talented graphic designer with over 12 years experience and currently working for himself - at the moment regions sponsoring graphic designers are South Australia and Tasmania (although we'd initally hoped to go to Melbourne) anyway, I've scouted loads of recruitment websites for graphic designer jobs but not getting very far no.gif.

OH happy to go to Australia provided he can find work otherwise no way - I fear that without the possibility of finding work, this Australian dream will not be realised.

Reading your thread has filled me with panick & dread? Are design jobs as scarce as snowflakes in the desert? You mentioned that you worked as a junior designer for 7 months - please can you offer any advice on creative agencies or specialist recruitment agencies in or just outside Adelaide. Did it take you long to find a job?

Best of luck with starting up your design commune, who knows with life's quizzical twists & turns maybe next year OH will be joining your thriving business!

Hi there

Thanks for your message. I really don't want you to be put off or to freak you out, but then again I don't want to tell you that is it easy when it isn't. I'm sure everyones experience is different. I do know that there are a lack of design jobs in Adelaide. Sign up to http://www.seek.com.au and set yourself up a job alert email for graphic design in adelaide and then you will be able to see what comes up. Another good website is http://www.alljobs.com.au - as this searches a couple of the main job websites.

I expected to come here and find it easy because of all my experience - but it hasn't been that easy. If there was a way for you to go to Melbourne or Sydney your OH would find it much easier to get a job - there are a lot more options there - still I came to adleaide because of the sponsored visa - so I'm not sure how you would be able to get to another place - but it would be great if you could! I love Melbourne! Anyway another option that I have looked at is moving to Noosa or Byron - the smaller towns on the coast - where you can live on the sponsored visa - they are beautiful and creative places - so maybe you could have a look for jobs there?

I am also signed with Aquent in Adelaide - your OH would have heard of them as they are a global recruitment agency with offices in the UK too. Maybe you could try and contact them in the UK to see if they are connected with Adelaide.

It took me around 6 weeks to get a job - which really isn't that bad! It is just that since then there been very few opportunities - and like I said it was a junior position - so it is not what I really wanted. Apparently it really is "who you know" over here - and I can see that to be true.

I think maybe I didn't research enough before I came here. Maybe just keep on having a look and researching - as your OH might be more successful. It really isn't a lost cause as your OH can go self employed on your visa - and there are plenty of business's that need design work. So if he is already happy to do that - then you could find that he would do amazingly well here! The business and opportunity is really in adleaide as it is a developing city - so don't lose hope! Your OH might find the laid back attitude an easier place to be a contractor or start on his own?

If this is your dream - then you will be able to achieve it - it is slightly more difficult than I thought it would be - but what isn't in life!

I really wish you all the best and if you need any advice or want me to find out anything for you - just let me know :) Like you say - you never know I might make a success of what I do - then I may be able to help you even more.

All the best

Jo

Hi,

That's certainly a brave move, setting up on your own! I am a Web marketing manager, here in the UK and will move to Adelaide 20th June, and I am aware of the lack of opportunities out there for marketing type jobs, the positive thing is, when Adelaide catches up and more growth is pumped up, hopefully design and indeed web marketing will increase also.

Well lets hope so!!

Hi Dean - thanks for your message - and good luck with the move! I think there are more opportunities in Web than in just print - I only do print and need to train in at least using dreamweaver and flash (as coding is beyond me!). Anyway - I'm pretty sure that you will not have too much of a problem :)

I think you are right about Adelaide needing design/web/marketing experienced people - I think they do already - they just don't know it yet!

Hi,

Eventhough I did dabble in both graphic and web design in the past, I am now more web marketing based, i.e Pay Per Click strategies, email marketing, affiliate marketing etc...

I think I am either going to have to pitch myself as an online manager or project manager. I think if I was a programmer I would have no problems whatsoever...

You never know our paths may cross!!

Hi'ya peeps,

Thanks so much for your advice Jo - OH was planning on contacting Aquent in the UK, we'll sign up for job alerts with the websites you've mentioned.

Noosa seems heavenly - perhaps we could start the design commune there and although I'm not a designer I'd happily join the team as the official 'tea maker' :)

Anyway, to all the talented people who have read this thread and might be feeling a little apprehensive about the job situation in Adelaide just remember.....Fortune favours the brave!

Have a fab day

Aussiehopper & Co ;)
