Buying a car

    Recommended Posts

Hi all, another question! We want to buy a car almost immediately, as renting is expensive - what is the process re insurance etc? We just want to get there, and buy a car in the first couple of days so should I have anything ready?

    Cheers.

Your rego includes basic third party personal insurance. This only covers injury to people, not property. You can legally drive with just this.

I would guess that most insurance companies would want an address.

They normally either include it or you pay for it at the time you buy the car. Remember you have to pay stamp duty on cars here too.

Thanks. Is the stamp duty included on prices you tend to see on sites like carsales.au, and do you pay it on both new & used cars?

    Cheers.

No, it's not included, you pay it when you transfer the rego over, so normally to the dealer who gets that all done, or within two weeks at the offices if a private sale. That is on all cars, but the amount goes by what you pay, so would be less for a used car generally.
