Hi I am off to visit the family in the UK next week and wondered if anyone has any tips on cheap car hire or how to reduce excess?

How's life?! Are you getting travel insurance? if so check if it includes excess cover for car hire we've had one before that does, also you can buy stand alone excess cover much cheaper from independant insurer, this was in the independant today...

I have just booked one for xmas, I use one of the car search engines to see whats around then go on to the hire company's web sites and check for any special offers. We ended up with europecar (3rd time now), found they had a special for expats visiting friends and family, took about 80 quid of the original quote. Be aware though it is not on all thier websites, think I got onto a central europe website of theirs.

 

Be careful when using your travel insurance for excess, need to check the small print, it usually says your covered so long as you have taken all the insurances offered by the carhire company in the 1st place. but If claire can let all know which travel insurance company she used. the independant one is worth checking out too.

Insure yourself against the excess (excess waiver insurance) from UK side, cost circa £30 compared to 4x that with the hire co. We tend to use Hertz when abroad, hassle free, nice new cars and never any issues until this time when car we hired was out of stock however replacement sought.
