Hi! We will be arriving in Adelaide at the end of November or start of December and are looking to make as many new friends as possible. We both love socialising, meeting new people and we would also appreciate advice from those of you who have already experienced the following:

- short term renting or leasing until we find our feet

- jobs which are available

- the best areas to live to be at the heart of exciting things!

we are both very excited about coming over and would like to hear from like-minded people!

Hi Guys!

Well that all depends really!......what kind of jobs are you looking for?....How old are you?.....what visas are you on?......is your heart of exciting things beaches?....city?.....outback?.....hills?.....have you been here before or have any idea where you would like to live?

Exciting times eh?.....Good luck and welcome!

Hi Claire and Tel

thank for replying to our post, we were a little worried that there was nobody out there but then remembered the time difference! d'oh!

Miche is 27 and is currently in a clerical role so she will be looking to do something like that and I am 36 and a bank manager with a sales background, so again anything in that line would be great. the visa that we have is a Skilled Nominated (Permanent) (class SN) subclass 190 (Skilled - Nominated) visa. i have to copy and paste it all of the time as i can never remember the exact wording!

we have never been to adelaide before so would appreciate all the help that you can offer - we are certainly more city and beach people than outback or hills people, but we would love to hear from others about their experiences and where to stay.

we look forards to hearing from you

If it's just the two of you and you don't have to worry about schools etc, I'd definitely be looking somewhere with more going on - have a look at Glenelg area, Henley and Semaphore for beach options that are good for a couple - bars, cafes, bit of life - or Norwood, Unley, Goodwood, North Adelaide, if your budget allows for places nearer the city but still within maybe 20 mins to a beach. Don't make the mistake of living too far out of the city or you will find you miss out on a lot. Use sites such as http://www.raa.com.au/maps/ for distances and travel times between places, sites such as http://www.seek.com.au/ for jobs, and for short term accommodation when you arrive check out the sigs on some of the posters on here, or have a look at a site such as stayz.com.au, or perhaps https://www.airbnb.com.au/

Welcome Phil & Miche,

have a good and save journey.

Regarding jobs it will be the quietest time in the year due to the slow down in many industries (x-mas and summer holiday). Jobs will be hard to get in that time, recruitment usually starts again end of January/mid February.

There are many beautiful areas here in Adelaide, depending on your preferred lifestyle near the beach or near the hills/city like Claire & Tel mentioned.

hi Diane

that is tremendously helpful! i have to say everyone who has been in touch with us on this site have offered really good advice and you are not exception to that!

we did have our eye on Glenelg as it seemed to be the best of both worlds with the beach on one side and the city on the other. We're not sure if we want to buy a car on rely on the communication links within the city - what have you experienced in relation to this?

what is your background? how long have you been in Adelaide?

Hey guys,

We are willing to meet up for a beer and a chat when you arrive?!

As Diane said if it's just the 2 of ya Glenelg is a great place to start for social aspect and transport etc! However relying on public transport in the long term in Adelaide will soon have you wanting a car I think.... I know I would! And if you wanted to visit anywhere outside the city/suburbs...... Forget it!

You might be ok if for instance one of you is a keen cyclist! My OH cycles to and from work in the city most days, and catches the bus in on others, but for shopping etc I think it's handy to have at least one car in the family. All public transport in Adelaide does tend to be very city-centric: imagine a dartboard with the bullseye being the city centre, and to get from A to B you always have to go via the bullseye!

I've been here with my family just over 9 years now - we live in the North East suburb of Highbury. It's been a very good family area, great schools, shops, transport routes etc, but once the kids have moved on, I think we'd look at moving somewhere within walking distance of the city and the cafes and bars etc that are there. I'm not a big beach person personally, and having one within 30 minutes drive is plenty close enough for me!
