Hi to everyone, Just come to PIA from PIO. My husband I have just started to think about coming to oz on a 175 visa. We are keen to get things started but currently waiting for some monies due to us from the dreaded Inland Rev so we can get started. Monies should be with us by end of April, then we will get started. Hope to be out in Adelaide back end of 2009.

Our only concern is that my husband works in IT and it seems from research on SEEK that there are not many jobs in his field available in Adelaide, for example there are 8 vacancies suitable on Seek for my husband compared to 64 in Melbourne.

Has anyone got any knowledge or experience with the IT market in Adelaide????

Looking forward to reading and meeting more of you on PIA.

    Hiya.

Me and the missus have both looked into this.

She has a software developer degree and has software out on the market for teaching in hospital theaters and i have a Digital arts and technologies degree in application, web design and software programming and also have software out in the market teaching deaf children how to understand sound visually.

However most ozzies are a lot more computer savy than people are here so good software jobs are few and far between so we are going on are original trades.

There are computer jobs there but not at the pay as probaly you would expect.

I worked in IT in Adelaide, the market there compared to Sydney, Melbourne and even Canberra is pretty poor

Hi, Yes, we see from a doing searches on Job sites like SEEK, CareerOne etc that there is a big big difference.

But do you think there is a lot of competition for IT jobs???? My husband works in IT Network Security.

What about yourself, how did you find getting a job in Adelaide????

There seems to be plenty of IT recruitment agencies in Adelaide, so one would assume there are jobs there.

    Best regards

I was there for 3 1/2 years during which time there there were limited opportunities. In the permanent positions you are expected to work long hours, and because the days are not as long as in the UK , i.e it usually gets dark between 6.30 and 7.00, it was usually dark when you finished work. Contracts were quite thin on the ground and you had to be prepared for long gaps in between, I eventually gave up on Adelaide, mainly because of the work situation, and moved to Melbourne and then Brisbane.

Moved to Melbourne mid 99, then up to Brissie in 2001. Quite a bit of work in Melbourne not so much in Brissie, but I prefered Brissie for the lifetyle, Melbourne is just like a large city. Theres government work in Canberra but it's a wierd place, like Milton Keynes but without the atmosphere! By the way I'm a Test Consultant

I emigrated to Adelaide in March 2007 on a skilled independent visa with my partner. I am a Senior Systems Administrator.

I secured a 10 month fulltime contract position at a University in my first week in Adelaide. However I found the University environment too restrictive as I am used to a more hands on approach and found there was no scope to utilise my skills and experience.

Luckily within 3 weeks I secured another job which is permanent fulltime on the same salary as I was on in the UK. I am still in this job and enjoy it.

As part of our emigration application my qualifications and skills had to be assessed by the Australian Computer Society. Through our emigration agents we paid additional money for an IT expert based in Australia to assist with the skills assessment, my references and he advised me how to set my CV out and the terminology to use for the Australian IT market which I think contributed to gaining employment quickly.

Adelaide is a small city so there will be less opportunities but we came to Adelaide because it was a smaller city and that is part of its charm.

The Universities often have IT jobs advertised on their websites so check them out to get a feel for whats out there.

    www.flinders.edu.au

    www.adelaide.edu.au

www.unisa.edu.au (they have 4 IT jobs on at the moment and have a special scheme in place to attract applicants)

    Hope this info is useful.

Hi Mr Technical, Finally got round to thanking you for such a positive post. Definately given us some hope. Thanks for the links too, have bookmarked them for future reference.

We are very keen on Adelaide, the fact that it smaller than the Melbourne & Sydney, really appeals to us.

We have a positive response from a recruitment agency in Adelaide too, so its looking very promising at the moment.

We are just about to start the ACS application, then onto the visa application. Fingerscrossed we should be ready to go in about 12/18 mths.

Thanks again and all the very best......

    Hello Mr Technical

Can you please tell me which agency you used?

I'm asking because I'm an analyst programmer and I'm looking for an agency that can in particular help me with my Australian Computer Society assessment. Unfortunately, I never finished my Computer Science degree and consequently I need to get recognition for my many years as an analyst programmer. You mentioned your agency hired a consultant in Australia to help. That sounds like a good idea.

    Many thanks!!!

I used a guy in Sydney called Peter Chiam he specialises in the ACS Skills assessment, might be worth dropping him an email.

Funny that, I was reading through his testimonials when I got your message.

It's certainly good to know he comes recommended. Testimonials look great too.

    Hi Pete

I used Overseas Emigration http://www.overseas-emigration.co.uk/ and would highly recommend them. The computer specialist they used in my process was Terry Hoey based in Australia.

    Cheers
