Arriving in Adelaide

The other thing is if people give a bottle of wine/small thank you gift etc that would be classed as payment. Insurance companies in general love nothing better than a way out of paying a claim.

I suppose it is a question of circumstances, if everything has gone fine then there is no need to involve the insurance as there is no claim to be made, the tax man may be interested though, but if there was a problem would a gift be given anyhow?

Keith, you need a police check to sneeze in front of a child here. I assume you or your wife don't do any work, paid or voluntary, with kids at all in Aus?

You don't seem to get that I wasn't picking on Doug, but you keep mentioning him. This discussion has moved on to a more general one but you keep mentioning Doug. There is no need to.

Linda did work with children here from babies to 5yr olds, as well as international students form ages say 9-18. and current voluntary work but not with children directly.

As I have said before you brought names into this 1st, I just maintain, as you do now, that there was no need to name names, had you not done so then this thread could well have not moved on to where it is now. If you re-read my first reply post I did sort of agree with what you were saying, and still do upto

As I have said in my earlier posts, we need to make our own judgment and instinct calls and make assumptions too.

Also back in the UK I was involved with the Scout movement, I did not have any checks done on me

Hi Keith!.....how are you both?

I'm not sure if it was a long while ago that you worked with scouts or if more recently then they were acting illegally. All scout leaders and volunteers must have police checks (although police checks IMHO are not worth the paper etc)

They must also complete courses in basic first aid and child protection.

Yes Claire we are both fine, as I hope you and Tel are? and yes it was before that time of more stringent checks. But what I am trying to get across is that we put our trust, faith or whatever you want to call it in people, whether they be the people we have contact with or the organizations that do the checks and controls, we can never be certain that everything is perfect, so we make judgment calls, some being easier to make than others with the info we have to hand some on assumptions, some on instinct, some on experience, some on recommendations or a mixture of them all. Gee people send unescorted children halfway around the world, how many un-checked people are they going to come across on those journey's?

In this instance, some kind hearted person from this forum ( which I am still strongly of the opinion he should have not been named within the context of the post), and not for the 1st time either, is offering free no obligation transport and no doubt they include other friendly advise, to a family of adults and children is on my judgment, assumptions and instinct, very low risk.

have a nice weekend Claire.

Keith

WOW! didn't mean to start a fire-storm with my offer to help others in need. I'm not offended by any remarks made as long as you all know, I'm honest, friendly and non predatory. I may be getting on in years but am still a safe driver, only one accident in the last 35 years and that was not entirely my fault.

If one can not pick up relatives, friends or strangers without police checks and insurance up-grades it's a bloody shame on this state/country. My offer stands to anyone wishing to use my "service", whether it's legal or illegal.

No one has said friends and relatives can't be picked up without a police check.

I am not sure I agree with you that picking up strangers without one is a good idea though.

I don't think you have started a fire storm, but a discussion is being had, and healthy debate is good for all.

We were very lucky as my brother in law lives in adelaide so he viewed properties for us, my husband also went over for 2 weeks at Easter and checked out the area we were moving to and looked at streets and areas we would like and also which were in catchment for the schools and did a reckie of everywhere. We had to find a property so we could get our daughter enrolled in school straight away, we were lucky we could do this.

We got a lift from Doug and all this furore over stranger danger makes me cringe. It was an altruistic act of kindness, which should be encouraged and praised not questioned.

The world is no more dangerous (quite the opposite) than it was in the past. The biggest difference is media reporting of everything and this widespread assumption that other people are not to be trusted. By all means teach your kids not to put themselves in vulnerable positions, but in this case they would be travelling as a family. As for the insurance aspect - pretty sure offering a free service to pick up new friends met online (in a fully insured car) is not contravening any laws - I certainly can't find one via a quick browse of the net.

Finding sinister motives in acts of generosity says more about the cynic than those offering their services through kindness in my opinion.

Doug, I am sure adelaidenow was not been offensive, maybe just erred a little in his choice of an example in trying to get his (valid) concerns across.

I wish you well Doug and safe driving.

Bring lots of woolly warm jumpers and fleeces and a hot water bottle. It is surprisingly cold and wet. We have been here for 3 weeks and everything is going wrong for us. We have been shown some awful places to rent, as the competition is very very fierce. When you look at a place you have to put in an application, along with other people, and then the owner of the property chooses who they want. Also, bring lots of back-up cash as everything is very costly apart from wine and petrol! Don't let this put you off, everyone we meet is lovely and loves Adelaide. We are just unlucky and stayed in the worst places, we have a 10 year old daughter with us. We are now staying in an old granny flat which is cheap rental-wise but we all had electric shocks on Saturday from the sink in the kitchen! The electrician is here, he's turned all the power off and STILL the metal kitchen sink is LIVE! Many years ago I lived in a third world country for 2 years and it was better than what we are going through at the moment.

Sounds terrible.

Why don't you look at

Have you checked airbnb.com.au for some better short term accommodation? Don't be put off by the daily cost as you can negotiate a better price for a longer stay. It also might suit you to have help from a local as I note from your other posts that you are having difficulty with getting about.

So hard to find a decent rental the agents were vile mostly and spoke to you like c*ap. Only a small amount have been helpful. Ive felt like they just dont want you torent anywhere its ridiculous. I ended up meeting a lovely agent and she really helped us. She will be getting a thankyou card and some flowers when we sign the lease xxx

Hi, yes I would love to meet up for a coffee and chat.

We have found somewhere to live and now we need to get sorted looking for a car to buy as we are renting one at the moment which got scratched down the side by an unseen triffid! We are feeling very down as we are fun loving hippies at heart and are wondering why such bad karma is affecting us here in Adelaide... maybe we aren't supposed to be here.

I realise your comment was probably tongue in cheek, but I know you've had a pretty rough time since you arrived so I thought I'd just try to reassure you

Australians are like any other people; you might occasionally meet an idiot, but basically everyone is just getting on with their own lives. If you are friendly, people are generally friendly back. Some simply want to get the job done, and won't give a rat's behind for your personal story or lack of experience here. It's a shame perhaps, but there you go.

I am sure that once you are in your new home, and can relax a bit, you will find SA is a brilliant place -especially for 'fun-loving hippies' ( totally my kind of people lol!).
