Malaysian Airplane Shot Down last night

    Recommended Posts

Devastating. Don't know how Malaysian Airlines can survive another tragedy with one of its flights. 27 Aussies on board apparently. And 153 Dutch. Awful awful news.

Ever stood at the end of the runway in the car parking area at Adelaide airport and thought how easy for someone to do the same with a hand held rocket launcher

Totally irrelevant, as the same just about applies to every airport in the world.

Very sad and my thoughts go out to the relatives of all involved. This will become very politically toxic with the world expecting answers to what has happened but also who is responsible as potentially this is mass murder!

i have my thoughts however these remain my thoughts and not comment as nothing is proven yet.

A pointless and inappropriate sentence though.....they were at 33,000 feet not near the end of a runway, also there are lots of things that could happen.....but this did happen

Horribly sad to think of all those families who have lost loved ones.

My heart goes out to them. I understand that there was no message from the pilot immediately before the plane was shot down, so I hope no one on the plane had time for fear or suffering.

As for Nobby's comment. I just don't think he thought before he pressed 'post'. I don't believe he meant to cause offence, even though it obviously would on a thread like this.

Anyone who has worked in any trade or industry where you are dealing with tragedy on a regular basis will know that humour is one of the ways humans deal with this kind of thing. I used to work in the City and was always amazed how quickly jokes started doing the rounds after an awful tragedy or terrible court case. Don't you remember the sick jokes about 7-Up after the space disaster that killed 7 astronauts? If someone's comments offend you, it would be far more dignified to just ignore them imho, rather than hop on your high horses in the "I'm more compassionate than you" contest.

Morning Diane!.....while I agree with using humour as a coping mechanism, I worked as a trauma nurse specialist in a trauma unit for over 10 years, I would never have used humour in a public place or to people that I didn't know. If I am hopping on my high horse then so be it....I am not in completion with anyone, in fact I would be the first to admit that I often show less feeling than the average person having been exposed to so much.

I don't think the comment in question however was in anyway a "humorous coping mechanism" just a stupid inappropriate remark irrelevant to the topic.

I took it as an observation, not a wise crack. I drive past the airport every day and it has indeed occurred to me before how easily something like that could happen there. Maybe it's watching too much tv, but I hold my breath a bit every time a plane flys over me (and I work near the Edinburgh air base, so some days that's LOTS) just waiting for one to fall out of the sky for whatever reason.

I grew up near an aerodrome and it was fairly common as most of the planes were very old for them to crash.

Just one of my paranoias (and no I don't like flying, once had a panic attack as a kid as I'd convinced myself we were going to die).

It is a terrible thing to happen, but terrible things happen all the time. A guy killed his kid last week (who is known to many people i know, he was one of our regular customers), people die on the roads every day, illness, murder etc. If we worry that something might offend someone we could never have a conversation except about rainbows and puppies. Speculation is some people's way of making sense of what has happened. I am one of those people, it looks like nobby is too.

Getting back to discussing the subject, hubby flew with MAS last week on a business trip and has yet to make the return flight. I was awake the other night as the news was breaking about the crash and was emailing him where he was overseas. Before anyone had even said missile I had said to him there was something very wrong with this plane going down like that. And of course was worried about him flying back next week. Then reports started coming through it was brought down by a missile and I realised they would make the air space over that area out of bounds to all commercial air traffic. I breathed a sigh of relief.

It is a tragic event and my heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones, friends or collegues. I think the recovery is going to be difficult and dangerous. I also think that those parties involved know who they are but there is a good chance they are covering up or have already covered up their actions and have help from others to do so. Groups are going to blame others, countries are going to blame other countries. I hope for all those who lost their lives and those left behind that someone is held accountable for what happened.

Just a shame about the timing of your post Nobby, though the event prompted you to post your thoughts, posted at any other time would, no doubt, have brought a whole discussion thread into being and you would not have been condemned as you are now.
