Hi My husband moved out here 20 months ago, and is a full time guitar teacher. It has been a long and difficult road, and he has managed to build up 4 hours a day 6 days a week on the private side, plus he does 4 hours a week at the local community centre. Schools are very difficult to get into as the music program in schools is very poor. All the schools he has tried to get work in already have guitar teachers, and yet there is always a waiting list. But on the bright side, he has got most of his students from those waiting lists through advertising in the local paper, and is starting to build a good reputation for himself, as he no longer has to advertise, and now gets most of his students through word of mouth, which he tells me is the way to go. Rick(my husband) says from what he has been told, guitar is taught in fairly large classes, which he does not want to do. He worked in schools in England for 8 years, and only taught as many as 3 at a time, but most of his work was either on a one to one basis, or paired lessons. Anyways good luck with your endevours.

Hi Phil

I think Rick may be down south way, although probably worth travelling, but if it's a bit far for you, my son is learning with a great guy who is based at St Peters, Payneham way. If you want his details, drop me a PM and I'll pass on his details.

(Don't want to steal anyone from Wizzy's OH though, so you might want to wait for her response first!)

For the original poster, my children's school offer (acoustic) guitar lessons in school from Year 5, and there are always more applications than there are places. The guy (Ian Seaborn) that teaches that also runs a primary schools guitar ensemble, and is based at Klemzig school (NE Adelaide). I understand DECS (Dept of Education and Childrens Services) are currently trialling a music tuition programme in a number of Adelaide Primary schools - details here - http://www.decs.sa.gov.au/docs/documents/1/MusicTrialsMediaRelease.pdf

and if your OH is interested in Senior School age teaching, there are a few state high schools that specialise in music, so it might be worth an email to them. Try Marryatville High School and Brighton High www.marryatvillehs.sa.edu.au and www.brightonss.sa.edu.au

Hope some of that helps - oh, why has my writing gone green?!!

Diane
