Speeding fines

    Recommended Posts

Just saw a Channel 7 report that states during the 2013/2014 year a total of $136 million was raised in South Australia through camera detected speeding fines. That's $136,000,000.00. Big cash!!!!!

Just wondering how much more expensive everything Govt related would be if no-one exceeded the road speed limit and whether proper crimes would be addressed instead.

TBH I'd have expected the total to be even higher!!

I always wondered why they cannot charge criminals fines / costs if proven guilty??

Think about it - loads of cash in the "Pharmaceutical Industry" here :wink:

I especially love the ones I see hiding in the bushes by the roadside in their high viz jackets just waiting to catch people heading down the hill on their way to work at 8am. We had that a few days in a week recently then they changed tactics and went to a busier road with more hiding places. Probably made a small fortune right there.

Most of the people "caught" by these cameras were never speeding. Safety cameras in Adelaide work on pieso sensors embedded in the asphalt, measuring the time when your wheels hit first sensor and then the second one.

In reality it means that any shake in the road surface can activate the camera (say - passing heavy truck) and if you are unlucky to be there - here you are forced to contribute to the revenue part of the budget. Happens every day.

The most outrageous cases sometimes get disputed, but for some (obscure???) reason the never get to the media and remain buried in Government papers.

For example, a volunteer (lollypop lady) who assisted schoolkids to cross the road near the school had parked her car in a view of a "safety camera" when an excavator with a rockbreaker was working in the nearby building site. From a memory, she has got in excess of 300 fines that morning, and sometimes her stationary vehicle was clocked doing in excess of 150 km per hour.

The system simply needs money, and system would not wait until you break speed limit.

Unfortunately it is rarely possible to contest the fine, and even if you are successful, it willl cost you tens of thousands of dollars.

Strictly speaking, none of the "speed measuring devices" used by the Government to rip you off is capable of measuring speed.
