I have an ever expanding gang of grandchildren :smile:and this is really useful info for people who want to eat out in a child friendly place...where you don't have to pay for the children!

As well as eateries on this list I have also been to The Hub in Aberfoyle Park (and we went on a Saturday)...kids meals were free.

If anyone else knows of anywhere else please share.......

SOME parents swear by them while others don’t know they exist. But “kids eat free” restaurant deals are growing in popularity as increased costs of living force families to look at affordable options for dining out.

So where are these restaurants, and which ones have the most appealing children’s menu? The Advertiser asked three experts — our own journalist and father-of-two Nathan Davies, food writer Kylie Fleming and mother-of-three Sophie Rayner to rate 15 menus in four categories: the deal, the “wow factor”, variety and nutrition. For Ms Rayner, 36, who also works for nanny and babysitting agency Little Poppins, restaurants offering a kids-eat-free deal is a drawcard.“Not only is it an excellent way to go out as a family to eat, but it also communicates that kids are welcome there and that’s always something I look for,” the Gilberton resident said, adding that when it comes to the menu simplicity is key.index

“You want a bit of variety but it doesn’t have to be a huge variety; you want the kids meals to be quite simple,” she said.“When I take the kids out for meals ... I don’t want them to be too complicated. Just simple meals the kids will happily eat; I don’t want to pay for a meal the kids are too intimidated by.”Kids menus, with at least four options, were scored on face value, not food tasted. This was to ascertain what best attracts families to choose to dine there. While the Belair Hotel’s bistro children’s menu took out top spot for its wow factor, the Walkers Arms Hotel’s extensive buffet menu reigned supreme overall, scoring 50.5/60.Food writer Ms Fleming said the Walkers Arms Hotel won her votes thanks to its “huge variety”, while Ms Rayner liked that the kids’ free meal deal was available every weekday.Walkers Arms Hotel venue manager Shane Schembri said the deal, which offers one free kid’s meal per full-paying adult in the bistro’s two-hour 5.30pm session, was a longstanding tradition.“It is usually close to booked out every night,” Mr Schembri said, adding that the venue felt the deal was a way to give something back to the community.“We’re such a successful pub ... and we know how hard it is for families to eat out, so with kids eating free it helps; a lot of mums pick up their kids from school and come straight in to save them from cooking.”While pub bistros dominate the scoring table, Mr Davies gravitated towards the Kwik Stix menu of modern Asian cuisine. “At least there’s some change from the nuggets and pizza standard,” he said. Both he and Ms Fleming also commented on Elizabeth Tavern’s menu, which used “fun names to interest the kids”. Such names include Lord of the Calamari Rings, and Pasketti (spaghetti).TGI Fridays also scored extra points for offering carrot and celery sticks with their “Stars” kids menu. While Nest was a low-scorer in the variety category, Ms Rayner said her kids “got really excited over the food” and that they would “definitely go back”. She commented that the quality of food at any restaurant, rather than the number of options on offer, would make her a return customer.DISCOUNT DINNERS FOR YOUR KIDS
