Hi all,

Can some one give me some guides as to what taxes are involved for the following things

a) Car tax

b) Council tax

c) Insurances for cars and house etc, tax?

d) Emergency levy tax

e) Health care

f) Wages

Also are there any other taxes that are normally required to be paid and for what sort of things

Hi Ian

My OH has been looking into this so we can answer some of your queries, and I'm sure that someone already out there will correct me if we're wrong!:

b) council tax: Based on valuation of property (exact method varies according to local council of which there are 68 in SA). The % rate varies each year, reduced in line with property price rises. A general high estimate would be 0.0035% of property value = $72.00 (£30.00) per month on a property worth $250,000

e) Health Care: The Medicare Levy is 1.5% and I think an additional 1% if earnings are over $50,000 p.a.

f) Wages: $0 - 6000 = 0%; $6001 - 25000 = 15%; $25001 - 75000 = 30%

Hope that helps

revised figures for tax on wages (I'd looked at Standard Tax Rates for 2005/6), these are for 2006/7:

f) Wages: $0 - 6000 = 0%; $6,000 - 21,600 = 15%; $21,601 - 63,000 = 30%; $63,001 - 95,000 = 42%; $95,000 plus = 47%
