Can anyone tell me if Centrelink is the equivalent of our civil service/local government

I am looking for a positon in a job centre something like a disability employment advisor or job capacity assessor?

I like working for the public sector but i don't know if it would be the same.

I am specialising in vocational rehabilitation so i am looking for the best route.

Working in government roles sometimes comes with the added requirement that you are a citizen of Australia. Centrelink are the same as the benefits agency of the UK.

You are spot on Libby, I was going to apply for a job with them the other day, only to find out I had all the relevent criteria for applying, experience, qualifications then only to look at the citizenship part.........I'm on a temp visa.......so that ended the need to apply for that job!!!

To top it all off it was only for casual work too!

Crazy - we're good enough to be let in, pay our taxes etc - but not good enough to work for the government.

Ironic that if you're a teacher on a temp visa - you're allowed to work for the government!

This was exactly what I meant Nick when I had my big rant against temp visas. They really do limit your job choices. I was looking at doing similar work myself...they always advertise for customer service people for Centrelink and so on in the paper, and will retrain you, but then it says you have to at least be perm residents. Most government jobs state you have to be Aussie citizens, and that takes five years to attain!
