White Ring?

Hi All

When my wife and I visited back in May (08) we were finding it difficult to sleep on particular night. So we got up and went for a walk to the nearest 'phone box to call our son in the UK (a surprise call just to check that he wasn't hosting a party - although when we got back couldn't help but notice that we had gained an extra couple of lanterns in the garden, and a few extra bottles of booze in the 'pantry!!Mmmmmm?:skeptical:) Anyway, as we looked up at the moon, we distinctly saw a 'white ring' in the night sky which completely encircled the moon. Can anyone explain what this was - we tried to take a photo but even with the digital camera, it didn't capture it at all well.

Cheers as always :notworthy:

Maybe it did Rache,

It was during the second week of our stay and throughout that week it was typically like an english Summer - cloudy, wet and a little windy with the odd break for the sun to shine thru! Come to think of it, :idea:I recall it had been raining earlier on in the evening.

Can't say that I've ever seen it over here tho? We thought we were seeing something unique (especially since it was 2 in the morning).

How's the weather there now? Heard say it hasn'r been great but then again at least it's autumn/winter? Here (you're not missing much) it's the usual; rain, wind, dark cloud, and frustratingly only clear skies at around 7pm when it's too late to do anything!! Wish we could sell the house!!!:arghh:

Cheers Rache;)

I think it is due to the ice partiales way up in the sky, that is the reason the sunsets are far more spectacular in the winter, it is due to the way the light hits them

Yep - it is due to refraction from ice particles in high altitudes,it can have a rainbow effect at times.

Only twice have I seen another phenomenon where it looks like oil on water in the sky - same thing but a very thin layer of very cold air refracts the light.:)
