Hi a quick question (another one!!!)

If OH did HGV driving licence here in UK would he have to repeat it in Oz?

Would anyone advise he does it here or over there?

I'd advise he do it over here. My husband did hgv class 1 and 2 in the uk, and when he got here, it didn't get transfered over onto his aussie driving license, so to do it in the uk, to use over here, would be a total waste of time. Unless things have changed, but not that I know of.

If you have an overseas Driver’s Licence and have moved to South Australia, you must change your overseas Driver’s Licence to a South Australian Driver’s Licence within three (3) months of becoming a permanent resident.

The holder of a current overseas Driver’s Licence from certain recognised countries does not have to undertake a theory and practical tests for car and motorcycle only. The United Kingdom is one of those countries.

To apply for a South Australian Driver’s Licence you will need to attend a Service SA/Registration and Licensing Centre with evidence of your identity. Please refer to website for a list of accepted documents: <http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/licences_certification/drivers/evidence_of_identity.asp>

Identification will be your current United Kingdom Driver’s Licence, passport and documentation from Category B, e.g. financial institution account card with signature and embossed name, and your South Australian residential address, e.g. rental/lease agreement, utilities bill (an electricity or gas bill for example) or bank statement.

A photo of you will be taken, and a temporary Driver’s Licence will then be issued. Your photographic licence will then be posted to you. A South Australian Driver’s Licence can be obtained for a period between 1 and 10 years. The fee is $26.00 per year plus a $15.00 administration fee.

Some licence classes, for example a Heavy Bus class, may not automatically be changed over when you obtain your South Australian Driver’s Licence.

Once you have obtained your South Australian Driver’s Licence, you can request to be issued with a temporary permit (for a Heavy Vehicle) for 30 days. During this 30-day period you will need to be tested by a qualified Driving Examiner in a Heavy Vehicle. Driving Instructors and Driving Schools are listed in the South Australian "Yellow Pages" Telephone Directory, the department does not make recommendations. Upon successfully completing the practical driving test the driving examiner will issue you with a Certificate of Competency.

The Certificate of Competency, your South Australian Driver’s Licence and $15.00 must be presented at any Service SA/Registration and Licensing Centre. Your Driver’s Licence will then be upgraded to a higher class. What do you need to bring?

· Overseas Licence - If your licence is not written in English you must bring an English Translation of your Driver’s Licence or your International Driving Permit.

· Evidence of Identity.

· A medical certificate if required.

· Concession card if entitled.

A client applying for a South Australian driver’s licence is not required to surrender their overseas driver’s licence at the time an ‘’’’Application for Drivers Licence/Learners Permit <http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/pdfs/forms/205.pdf>(MR205) is completed. Even though the overseas licence holder is exempt from the requirement to surrender their licence, upon the issue of an SA Learner’s Permit or licence their overseas licence is considered to be voided.

Please be aware that if you drive a vehicle for fare, hire or reward you are required to obtain Driver Accreditation. Overseas accreditations are not transferable to South Australia.
