Moped and criteria to use one?

Hi there,

 

We're thinking of renting somewhere that's 20 minutes by car to the city but on the bus it would be a lot longer as it's a bitty far away and might even take two buses. So..my query is....my son is just about to take the theory test to get his australian provisional but would that allow him to drive a moped?

 

fingers crossed for a positive result..either that or I'm chauffeuring big time :-(
