Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice. We're thinking of hiring a campervan and travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne and looking for advice on where to stop in between.

We'll be travelling for 1 week and have a 7 year old that we'd like to keep entertained on the trip :skeptical:

We'd appreciate any advice you can give

Thanks :wubclub:

We went on the overlander ( train ) from Adelaide to Melbourne. It took all day and our kids really enjoyed it. Stayed in cheap accom overnight in melbourne and came back via the ocean road to Adelaide. Stayed ina couple of " Big 4 " camp sites on the way .

Hi Jackie,

Depends on the route you take... we went to Naracoorte caves and Mount Gambier on a road trip a few weeks ago...If you do go cross country and not just the highway I would recommend stopping in Naracoorte looking at the caves and the swimming lake there is ace for kids. If you stop in Mount Gambier you should take him to the umpherston sinkhole at dusk and take a bag on fruit (they love soft fruit)to hand feed the possums...The blue lake is highly impressive but not to our 9 year old it has to be said....good luck with your travels xx fiona

How much does the train cost and how do you book?

Hi Jackie,

Val and I did this in Jan/Feb 2007 from Adelaide to Sydney and had a fantastic time in our Camper stopping off here and there for the night. We found the Big 4 sites are very well equipped. See http://www.big4.com.au/ which may help you.

The route we took and the distances were:

Adelaide to Kingston SE.

Kingston SE to Mt Gambier

Mt Gambier to Port Fairy

Port Fairy to Port Campbell

Port Campbell to Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay to Wye River

Wye River to Geelong

Geelong to Ashley Gardens Braybrook, Melbourne

Total distance was 1025 km / 637 miles. The longest stretch was to Mt Gambier which took about 6 hours and from Adelaide to Kingston SE there isn't really anything to stop for. (In our opinion)

We will see if we can find the camp site names we stopped at and post them on here for you, we did try to book them in advance and went for sites with en-suite shower and toilet facilities which were great just reversed in and connected the electric up. So easy.

We had a fantastic time and sure you will also, we look forward to reading the story of your trip on here one day.

Does anyone know if you need to stop at caravan parks or can you park other places, the reason I'm asking is because I've phoned round a few caravan parks and they want you to book a minimum stay of 4 nights and we don't want to be in the same place for that long, we werte thinking of taking 2 days to get there and 2 days to get back and 3 days in and around Melbourne and we don't mind "roughing it" there and back.

Thanks for the info so far

Jackie
