Is there any call for dressmakers and curtain makers

    Hi everyone,

Now that we have our 475 visa I was wondering if anyone knows if there is much call for people with sewing and design skills.:)

i have been working in the Uk designing wedding dresses, prom dresses, dance costumes, doing alterations to clothing and making curtains and blinds.

I've got SA sponsorship as fashion and textile designer and have seen a few jobs in the Adelaide advertiser but am getting a bit worried about the job market with the recession.

Do you tend to put up curtains in your houses or just stick to blinds.

Also was wondering if the kids do end of school proms. It seems to be pretty big over here at the mo.

Hope you don't mind me asking. Just wondering if I should be aiming at more casual surf style stuff.

    Thanks a lot:p

Yes, they definitely do senior proms, and dress up to the nines for that! My daughter even had a "Graduation Ceremony" when she finished primary school, and some of the girls had some flashy dresses on for that too!

There seems to be quite a lot of "formal wear" shops around - I pass one on the drive into the City around Fullarton Road way - next time I go past I'll make note of the name. Probably worth getting a list of those type of places and going in and chatting with them when you're here.

Weddings seem HUGE here too - whenever we're down at Henley Beach in the summer, the wedding parties seem to come down like they're off a conveyor belt for photos, one after the other after the other - all with beautiful dresses and it seems like about ten bridesmaids each, plus groomsmen (several) for the groom!

Theres not much work in the sewing business over here. I am in the same boat. Have found a part time job in an alteration shop, but not sure whether to stop depends on the wages!!!

    Hi,

I am a curtain maker and we are arriving in Adelaide on 3rd September.

I have worked with a lot of curtain designers and interior companies in the Uk. If you are still stuck I would be more than happy to help you out.

Hi my name is Donna. All has gone quiet at the moment in the sewing trade.I have managed to find a job in an alteration shop which i quite enjoy. At lot of sewing jobs over here are in lounge/ furniture manufacturing, which i have just left, too stressfull.Ready made curtains are too cheap so people tend to buy them. They do have proms, but so many shops over here sell lovely prom dresses. Hope that answers your question. happy hunting!!

I can't give you a statistical answer, but for the Brits in Adelaide I should think curtain making would be great as every house seems to be steeped in old fashioned net curtains - which personally I hate - and too short or too long curtains. A UK friend of mine has just ordered some curtains to be sent over from Next as she says she can't find a decent pair, ie M&S off the shelf variety, anywhere. Certainly if we weren't renting I'd want someone to make some. Shops are quite specialist here, they don't seem to do this kind of thing in dept stores, that I've seen anyway. Good luck.
