Shipping a tent

    Recommended Posts

    Hi All,

Has anybody any experience with camping and tents. Are the Ozzie tents made from different material than those in the U.K. We love camping and it something that we wish to continue when we arrive in Adelaide.

We bought a new tent in the U.K. approx 18 months ago. It has hardly been used, due to the U.K. weather!!. It has an integrated ground sheet and no gaps.

The shippers have advised that we shouldn't bring it with us as the material wouldn't be suitable for the heat and it would be like a sauna.

Are tents made from a different material in Oz and is there a specialist camping website that I could have a look at.

    Many thanks

Seems like your shippers dont want you to bring anything! I have been looking around at tent prices here, they seem very good value. We had bought a new tent in the uk and we were advised not to bring it, because if customs decide to open it and clean it(incase of any mud on it) we could be paying alot for that.

Hopefully someone will have more advice.

We were told the same - that customs like to check tents thoughly and then may charge to clean them. The cleaning may destroy the tent...

I would advise you sell your tent and buy new here. It would be less trauma. We adopted this approach with several things - like hoovers etc.

We bought our tent over .No problems at all - we cleaned it with jeyes fluid. Really glad we bought it - its a bit like a telly tubby dome tent - have been camping in it in 100 degree heat - no problems at all.

    Hi Nick

When you say you cleaned your tent with Jeyes fluid, what parts. Obviously the bottom ground sheet as this will have been in contact with soil, but what about the actual tent itself. I know that when our tent has been stored and you open it up it smells a bit musty and damp. Is this something customs will be looking for?

My OH is adamant that we shouldn't bring the tent, but it has only been used 4 times. It is a dome shaped tent with three pods and it has a built in ground sheet with no gaps - to keep out the creepy crawlies!!

    Any advice please.

    Thanks
