What's Going On!!!!!!!

This site was my life line before i came here.. But since i have arrived, it seem's to have turned very nasty at times. I thought the idea of the site was to give advice, good or bad, but that would help us out..

To me, it has become very bitchy ( IMO), and them, visa's us!!!! There are some great peple on ere who give great advice, and i for one would have been lost without them, but it seem's lately that it is turning into and slangin match as too who is best!!!!

We all come from different walks off life, with diierent opionions, yet some comments, IMO, seem just darn rude!!! I have been here 10 weeks and am findin it really hard... The homesickness, is so much worst than i thought, other's will say they love it from the start, but i thought the whole idea of this forum was to provide info on how to settle, what's good and bad, how to get started and make life easier...

Stop slaggin people off, and remember how u felt when u first arrived, or in the process of coming, it's not easy and we should all remember that!!!!!!!

    This is just IMO,

Good luck to u all, it's not easy!!!!!

Been a user of forums like this for many years.........happens on and off..........

Some people say stuff coz they know they will get a reaction and it will turn nasty.....some need to think first about how 'open' they should be as well....

I have always been honest with my comments on sites.......some may not like that...so be it........

I know lots of people who drift away from sites like this when they get settled etc.........i've continued as i think experiences we've been through..can help others......

Exactly and not only that when this site started it was populated by mostly "rosey glass wearing wanna live in Oz" posters who thought life in oz is all milk and honey, then when SOME of them got here they realised it wasnt and started to whinge about things!!! That is when the bickering starts, also people become more able to feel they can say waht they want on a forum the more settled they get.

But thats the way it is unfortunatly

I do think your damned if you say anything negative about Adelaide and damned again if you say anything positive about England maybe these people are homesick themselves and its the only way to cope.

Others I think are just spitful.

    Hello Cara,

I know what you mean. I was homesick for the first few months - terribly so. I always knew exactly how many months/weeks I had been here. But on the seven month mark (2 weeks ago) I didn't even notice! I guess that means I am much more settled and that's great.. However, I speak to my family every weekend and I always feel sad after the calls. I still miss them terribly and can't wait to go home in July for a three week holiday. I do love it here now, but still feel that the trade off is too great. I can't see me being here forever but will definitely make the best of it while I am here. I know that I would miss Australia, especially the beaches and the weather, but people are more important to me.

Yes, it is sad when people slag others off, but that's people for you. It''s kind of voyeuristic though as those posts get hundreds of viewers(thousands sometimes), so I guess we like to look at the scandalous posts as they unfold without necessarily joining in. It's also good to see people get put in their place when deserved! The positive side of course, is that there are some fab folk on here who are always happy to give solid advice and lend you their shoulder to cry on.

I hope things get better for you Cara as you begin to settle. It does get better in time but you have done an enormous thing in coming here, it's bound to take a while to adjust.

I wish you and others at this stage of settling lots of luck. If you are lonely or bored, you just need to say on a new thread and people will offer to meet up for a chat.

    Take care,

I agree with this thread. I sometimes think people take things to heart too much and forget its an open forum with people who have very strong opinions on things.

I tend not to look at it as much as I used too but I would like to say when I have posted anything - I have had superb support and advice and I would like to thank allof those who have helped me along the way ;)

Great post and my thoughts exactly. There was a time when I was on here all day everyday but I must admit I have been staying away for a while due to the bitchyness which seems to start on the odd thread regarding jobs etc...

I still owe everything to this site and will continue to pop on when I arrive in Adelaide to try and help people as I have been helped.

I have met some fantastic people via this site, I have friendships for life which began on here and I just hope this still continues for others.

Some people just need to learn that if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all !!!! Its not necesary to read and reply to EVERY post !!!! There's alot of post that don't interest me so i just skim past them until i find one that i do read or feel i can help someone with a reply. Some of the replies are down right rude and completely off topic so not necesary. For example if someone is selling a "used" item on here is it necesary on the open forum to state how worn or overpriced it is ??? All this will do is stop anyone else from buying it.

This is aimed at all posters, not the original poster.

It's a forum. Crikey some of you guys complain if people post and people don't.

Some blame doom and gloomers, some blame rose tinted shade wearers.

Your bloomin human, course you don't agree, we all different opinions.

It's about peoples experiences, thats why they post, or add to a thread. It's only a few who do it for a bite.

Can you imagine struggling to get work in your first few months, all that money spent, all those emotions raging like a pubicly (is that word?) challenged teenager. Your heads up your a$$. you want everything to be rosey but your struggling. People will say i told you so, because they did, but you never chose to read those threads because your journey involved getting here, not being here.

Every body makes a decision, they make their own. So when its challenged they give reasons why they justify that decision. Thats when the back biting fires in.

I have said before and will again...... not many new people comming, so not much advice being given....... so its people just posting everyday stuff.

    To the OP.

How was Blackpool when you left? I left Preston a year ago, and still think back.

10 to 14 weeks seems to be a killer, then you snap out of it. then again at another 8 weeks, cos something always goes wrong and you think back. after that i found it birthdays and stuff, family and mates.

Basically it's only natural, well you did move 10.5K miles away so some things have to change.

There will ALWAYS be tough moments. Think back to why you came, why you started and then make an effort to visit those reason, be it the beach, the bbq, or the slower pace of life.

We can all have "found memories" but most of all remember this does not suit everyone, and it takes real balls to say you are going back.

Give it time, it usually works out fine.

A few weeks ago after sitting down at the computer with a glass of wine I put an opinion on a job thread – BIG MISTAKE. I have always been too honest with my thoughts and was subsequently told to “Get over myself”. I certainly did not mean it to cause any conflict. I nearly gave up on Poms in Adelaide but then I thought I will not be playground bullied. I will not get into an arguments because it is not in my nature. Poms in Adelaide has helped me so much prior to coming here and also once here. If it wasn’t for a nice girl called Tracy pointing me in the right direction of a job agency, which specialise in my husbands work, my husband would not of got his job as we would of not found it (after two weeks of getting here). Also, other kind people helping me with such queries as driving licences etc. I will carrying on using Poms in Adelaide and will try and help as many people as I can.

Yes,it is true, and in my opinion this usually starts with idiots winding up those who are finding settling here difficult, with family issues, jobs and accomodation etc.As their path to security has been relatively easy, they assume that this should be so for everyone else! Then come the sanctimonious, smart arsed comments like"Did you not look in to these things before you arrived here"These smart arsed idiots should not be allowed to post such diatribe on here,as this is the last thing we all want to hear at such a monumental time in our lives.

    Hi Cara,

I must be missing all these comments but I don;t get on here as often as I used to :-( I have had some great advice from people when I have asked questions. I know nothing in this life is perfect and I think sometimes people do go thinking everything is going to be great in Australia - I just really want to give it a go and I'm sure my hubby and I will be very happy. It will hit me knowing I can't see my family as much as I do now but my parents live in Cyprus and my sister in the UK and we did go for nearly 2 years without seeing each other - will just have to go on skype and messenger!!

The quality of life is what we are looking for - we don't have one now. We are commuting for 2 hours each way every day and you can't make plans in Ireland cos of the weather. Ok we might take a little while to get jobs (I work in Accounts and Dave is a butcher) and when we do it won't pay as much as we get now but hey I know which lifestyle I would prefer. The weather is such a factor and the beach which I really miss (I'm originally from Devon) and now live in the Midlands of Ireland so don't see it anymore :-(

I'm just looking forward to making some friends and meeting up for a drink or whatever and enjoying life - we only get one shot at it so......

    Vicki :-)

I have to disagree with you on that score, The ''Did you not look into these things'' comment is a valid one! I knew that my UK truck licence would not be transferable so i knew if i wanted to do the same job i would need to re do my test..at great expence! Same goes for various licences and permits needed for certain trades, surely people should find out about these before rocking up and expecting to walk into a job!!!

I do feel for those who can't settle, i really do, but i have to say some things on here and other forums that people moan about are plain crazy, could just be venting thier frustration maybe, but such posts are also negative to those waiting to come out here!

Some of the things i read on forums prior to moving here really put me off at times, you have a nice pleasent picture of Australia and the next minute your being told your going to be murdered in your bed or run off the road by hoons everytime you go to do the schoolrun......It's rubbish!

Simon( Who actually things this is a wonderful place to live!:D

Well said everyone, I think some people should show a little more empathy and compassion when people are struggling. Maybe look at things from other peoples point of view and then people wouldn't be so quick to make harsh/rude comments.

Everyones journey here is different, no ones is right or wrong.

The happy people feel they are more than entitled to tell us all how good Adelaide is, but I feel the sad people are just as entitled to say the bad bits too.

I think for every person on here that says harsh/rude comments there are 10 more nice people so just let what the rude people say go over your heads and they will soon stop making the comments. :cute:

I have to disagree with this too I dont think "did you not look into it first " is a smart arsed sanctimonius comment. I would think that when making the move to another country with all your family in tow, "looking into it " is the very first thing you do before even applying then you carry on looking into the whole way throught the application.

And if we didnt hear that some people find it easier than others, then people wouldnt know that sometimes its easy, just the same as if we didnt hear the bad things then everyone would come here totally unprepared:GEEK:

I would say its more like 100/1.

I think people are missing the point. No one is upset or angry by people posting negative comments. No one gets the hump when people say how wonderful it is either. Its not what is aid but the snide spiteful way it is said.

If I posted on here that I don't like the place and I intend going back to the UK asap I can't see this upsetting anyone. However if I posted that Woodcroft (where I live) is a dump and full off feral thickos and anyone that wants to live there is either desperate or a blind fool, then I would imagine that I would have upset quite a few posters.

Adelaide and Australia doesn't work out for everyone. We all know this. It is a gamble from the word go. No matter how much research or how many rekkies you do can possibly prepare you totally for living here or anywhere.

Again its not what is said but the way it is said. I've had enough so from now on I will delete anything that I find nasty. This doesn't mean anything negative. I'm all for negative posts as a balance must be acheived. People need to know its not 'a piece of cake' moving here. BUT watch what you post. Opinions are one thing snide nasty comments are another. And for those people that think that the moderators delete posts because we don't agree with them, think again. We delete them because they cause offence. Again not what is said but the way it is said. I will be following the forum rules by the letter from now on and not letting anything go. If this doesn't sit well with anyone then please feel free to complain to Tim.

    Cazzie,

Your post nearly made me cry!!! Very heartfelt.

Cara, I'd be interested in how you're finding it too. We're going to be there in a 6 weeks. You could start a new post and write how you've found it and things you've found useful. It might help you realise how much you've accomplished since you've been there too.

I'll be there shortly, and would love to grab a coffee (or large glass of wine!!!) and put the world to rights!

It is a very brave thing to do.. and we are all, so very different, but this forum gives us one thing in common. It's always good to talk to people that have been in a similar situation. I know we don't necessarily want to hear all the doom and gloom posts, but at the same time I want to get a realistic view of everything. Perhaps we should make an effort to post about possitive stuff too.. I love reading about people that have found work, or quirky stories! I loved the threat about the spider!!!! I sent it to everyone at work... now they finally have something to take the mic of of me for, instead of just being jealous of us moving! It's good to have a bit of banter.

You'll feel more settled soon, and you can always go home. Just enjoy the adventure while you're there.

I aggree somewhat with the comments so far, however after our experience of advise that is offered online, here and other sites (as i am sure we all know of and used:embarrassed:) the reality is somewhat different on occasions, but the majoritory is of advise is good value and should be used to ease your way into a new life abroad. But just because people dont use PIA some people may not even know of it, so some compassion from us is the order of the day. Happy new life to one and all in oz:D:D
