Cheap/ Second hand furniture near Brighton?

    Recommended Posts

Anyone know anywhere we can get some cheap furniture? We are after bedroom furniture and a desk etc for the kids. I have been keeping an eye on ebay and Gumtree but wondered if there was anywhere where you can actually go and see things before you buy.

Also need some vinyl flooring/ plastic mat for under our dining table (trying to save replacing rental carpet!!) - do places do off cuts/ remnants cheap like back in the UK?

    Thanks!

Do you have an address for this place? Not been up that way before and don't want to spend the morning driving around! Thanks :-)

You can pick up some great stuff at the Scammells auctions, usually held on a Monday from early morning. You can go in to check what they have available on a Saturday morning. I have picked up some fantastic buys there and furnished five properties with everything from there, even pots for the garden. Some times they don't have as much but I am usually pretty lucky there. They also have an online catalogue so that you can check it out beforehand and make a bid on the items without even being there, so if you go in on the Saturday and find things that you want, register yourself and make note of the items you are interested in (get a hard copy of the catalogue). If ever you are looking for something specific, ie kids bunk bed you can try calling the Vinnies at Mitcham and ask them to put your name down if one comes in they will call you and you can go take a look.

    Anyway that's one suggestion.

Went to Lions today - thanks, was easy to find. Didn't get anything though - not much that wasn't damaged or really old fashioned. Maybe we went too late? The kids had hair cuts at 10am so we went after that.

Am v fed up of shopping for furniture now. Looked at scammells online but couldn't see anything this week - will keep an eye out.

There are a number of OP Shops in Brighton Road, as you go towards Glenelg.

They are worth looking at as you can often find reasonable 2nd hand stuff in most. You may have to travel around a bit and look in a number, to find just what you are looking for, but Vinnies tends to be cheaper than Salvo's, and there seem to be numerous others. The Red Cross shop at the top of Shepherds Hill Road on the right, just before Woolworths has some quite good pieces sometimes, but you just have to keep looking.
