We lived many years in Adelaide & many more in Perth. We visit Adelaide every year to see our daughter.

I find there is a lot to like in both States. Adelaide is not such sprawling suburbia but Perth has many other advantages. Milder Winters . we have had 25c most of this week. Great roads, fast electric trains & fantastic beaches. I find the cost of things much the same unless you dine out in fancy restaurants. And the cost of Utilities are much less.

Yes, it's a bit further to the other States but it does'nt matter much once you are on the plane. And much cheaper fares to Asia.

Keldaz . . next time you visit I suggest you catch the train down to Mandurah. You have the sea & the Estuary & the cost of housing is reasonable.. . 48mins from the City by train.

We went to Bali the first time 2yrs ago. Arrived home undecided if we would ever go back there.

However, we decided to go again last year, learning from our first experience. Loved it in Sanur, more suited to old people like us in our seventies. Hired bikes & rode along the beach path a lot. That was in June . . . went again in September.

This year we can't wait to go again in August!

I would'nt like to recommend a hotel as it depends on how much you want to spend & what you are your expectations.

Our main complaint is that people are allowed to smoke in clubs & restaurants.

Just realized that electric increased to 25.9052 cents per kWt on the 1st July, here in Perth, WA.

For our electric here in Perth, WA it's 22.624200 cents per kWT & no service charge. And there is only one supplier here. Stays the same winter & Summer.

Yes, I understand that you have been living in Perth for 6yrs. I have lived in both States. I wanted to point out that IMO some things are cheaper & other things are not. In Adelaide coffee & meals out are cheaper also housing & rents (unless you live as far from the City as Seaford , equal to Mandurah). The two downsides IMO is that utility bills are higher & Adelaide Winters are much colder. Temps don't seem much different but there is such a chill factor there. But I still miss Adelaide . . . More compact & closer to the other States.

I do not think you need PR to work at the mine sites. I was talking to a young Irishman at the bus stop last week. He had been in WA 3months & was driving a truck up there. He was wondering how he could get PR & then bring his GF over.

Sorry to confuse you Scouse. I live in Perth (Mandurah) & I am talking about Perth. But you might see things differently. I am in Adelaide regularly & feel able to compare the two places.

Take Tamara's advice & go for a weeks holiday. It is the o ly way to find put if you prefer it, or not. We will be going in July. I will be taking all my warmest clothes with me!

IMO this has an effect on rents & house prices . . . unless you move South, quite a distance from the City. This you can do as better roads & transport. I believe it is expensive to go to restaurants & buy drinks. But most of us . . on fixed or low incomes eat at the local Chinese & bring our drinks home from the bottle shop. The main s/mkt prices are the same & we shop around for fruit & vegies, same as we did in Adelaide.

As Tamara says 'do you have a job to go to in Adelaide?'. And can you cope with cold Winters. Although cold at night here in Perth it is a warm 21c in the day time. It may drop to 18c in July but Adelaide will probably be much colder.

We have lived in both States. We are living in Perth at present but still visit family in Adelaide regularly. Rents may be cheaper in Adelaide but check out the cost of Utility bills which are definitely higher in SA.

Back in the 1970's while living in Adelaide I heard that he ran the hotel at Grange.

They altered some of the facts. Maybe the producers thought we'll use Glenelg it is more well known.

We arrived in Adelaide in 1973 with two children. During the 1980's when they were leaving school there was not sufficient training for them & employment benefit was handed out instead. Inspite of the goverment saying, even then,that there will be a skills shortage in 20yrs time. It certainly came to pass!

Our daughter & her husband both grew up in Adelaide. They are desperate to find employment so that they can keep up with the mortgage & the high cost of electricity. The last job she started but was then told the previous employee had decided she had changed her mind about leaving.

At present she is very excited about the possibility of a paid job . . 20hrs wk . . working at an Op shop (charity shop). But first she has to work 6days as a volunteer to see if they like her.

Her OH is a shelf stacker, casual for 15yrs, for a large food chain supermarket. His hours have been cut & he gets called in odd days here & there.

I live in Perth . . . also lived a long time in Adelaide. I agree entirely with Jim & with Smit.

I have never heard about any trouble with natives or high fences.

Food costs much the same now & utility costs are much lower in Perth than in Adelaide.

Winters are not so cold as in Adelaide.

You are not misreading me Jim. Our electricity costs 22 62 cents per unit. Car registration costs $236.25 for 6mths or $446.60 for 12mths. Water $1.33kl. Rising to $2.39kl over 500kl.

Aged pensioners do not have to pay for driving license or supply charge for electricity.

I am amazed at your speeding fines. If you travel 20klms over the speed limit here (not so difficult on freeways if you reduce speed too late. It drops from 100k to 80k) the fine is $150.

We live in Perth, WA but visit Adelaide regularly. Our daughter has just left & returned home to Adelaide. She remarked that the cost of food was no different, amenity bills far less & house prices & rents much the same if you travel the same distance from the CBD. As Seaford.

EG Rockingham or Mandurah. In fact they were surprised to see 'house & land package' from $298,000. at Meadow Springs.

Over the years I have suffered this awful affliction. The only thing that worked for me was cortisone injections. I had two in the same heel. It is not so painful if you have a guided injection. The GP will send you for scans first so that it can be put in the correct place. The first time I had injections it lasted a number of years. I needed them done again ha year ago & so far I am still pain free.

Regarding orthotics I have had loads of problems. It took me 7yrs to connect a stabbing pain in the groin with orthotics made at the podiatrist. When the PF condition returned I bought shoes at the chemist with removable orthotics in them. The cortisone had fixed the heel pain but for a year I suffered pain in my instep which went away after I removed the orthotics. I spent 8yrs in unnecessary pain due to those things!

One downside to Perth is they don't do day light saving ,, meaning in summer months when it's very hot & sticky it gets dark very early around 7 - 8 , where as here in Adelaide we can still be sat on the beach watching the sun going down @ 9 .30 or later ! Just a little thought for you to consider !

WA has had several referendums concerning daylight saving & each time has been voted 'No' due mainly to the reason you mention. In the summer we are more than pleased for darkness to descend early, rather than late. Perth does have more hours of sunshine than any other State.

I agree with Jim re house prices & rentals, also with Misplaced. If you live anywhere South as far as Aldinga - - such as Rockingham or Mandurah prices would be the same. There is also the advantage of new Freeways & electric train which probably makes the journey, if working near the CBD, shorter & more comfortable.

I have not found any difference in the price of food or fuel on recent visits. Certainly electricity, rego & water rates are cheaper. And aged pensioners don't have to pay for a driving license.

Distance is an issue but we are closer to Asian countries - - cheaper to Singapore & Bali. Most of us put up with this for the better climate.

I have'nt heard that more migrants return home from here. Perhaps as there are 1,000 people arriving weekly this could be possible.

Interesting read and it is good to see all who have posted say it is worth it. I guess at the end of the day it's YOU who has to make it work and make it worth it.

 

I'm just at the stage now, where I need to put the graft in to try finding a job, although we may be going at the wrong time leaving in October. Wifey and I have decided we will give it at least 2 years, by which point we will surely know if we're staying or not but in all honesty I can't see us wanting to go home at the moment. Worst case scenario is we may want to go to Perth for instance after the 2 years.

Perth's a great place. I live there. The nights are cold but we're having 22c in the day!

I was referring to Bigal's post. IE 12hrs a week starting at 4.0am. Woolies in Adelaide is a chain of food supermarkets. They don't sack you they just cut your hours down.

Sounds like my Son In Law. Are you referring to Woolies?

I used to blame the teabags for not making a decent cup of tea but then I realized it was the water. When I visit Adelaide I used to buy a cask of water for making the tea but now my daughter uses a jug with a filter which is okay. But it's heaps better than 30yrs ago when the bath water was brown & the washing came out brown too. They used to say that ships would'nt take on water at either Aden or Adelaide because of it's quality.
